General Purpose

This position works under the general supervision of the Finance and Administrative Services Director. Day-to-day work is assigned, distributed, and coordinated by the Lead Mechanic. Responsible for performing, diagnosing, and repairing all vehicles and equipment owned by the City. This position requires working both independently and as part of a team while demonstrating excellent, respectful customer service and strong interpersonal skills.

Essential Functions

Inspects, services, diagnoses, and repairs all light and heavy‑duty City vehicles and equipment.

Performs preventive maintenance and makes repairs to vehicles; maintains internal combustion engines (gas and diesel), carburetors, fuel injectors, transmissions, differentials, air and hydraulic systems (turbo, supercharger systems), electrical, computerized control systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, suspensions, brakes, tires, exhaust, etc.; may perform emergency field repairs and services.

Welds and fabricates parts as needed.

Test maintenance and repair work to ensure satisfactory results.

Enter repair data into the fleet main program within 24 hours of completed repairs.

Responds to and provides assistance to others either in person or by phone, text, or email.

Perform duties that may include bending, stooping, kneeling/crawling, and walking. Frequently lifts tools, parts, and equipment weighing as much as 50 pounds individually and occasionally as much as 100 pounds with assistance.

Drives and operates vehicles and equipment, including picking up and delivering vehicles for servicing.

Operates shop equipment, including cranes, vehicle hoists, special tools, etc.

Manages numerous tasks and assignments with frequent interruptions.

Work may require exposure to stressful circumstances, including the meeting of deadlines, inclement weather, and other stressful work conditions. Regular exposure to unpleasant and hazardous working conditions, which include exposure to noise, toxic chemicals, cleaning fluids, fumes, motor fuels, oils, etc.

Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow OSHA safety measures.

Job attendance is required, except for authorized leave. Must be available to respond to calls as needed and be available for emergency situations after regular work hours.

Maintain a clean and safe work area.

Oversees the shop when the lead mechanic is absent.

Performs other duties as required, including working on call and overtime as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Education/Training:

  • A. High school graduation or equivalent;
  • B. Four (4) years of skilled mechanic experience in maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • C. Any combination of experience and education.

2. Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Exhibits a strong understanding of the mechanical and electrical systems of vehicles and related equipment.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle diagnostic systems and methods.
  • Ability to handle various tools and equipment.
  • Observe all safety precautions to protect against accidents, hazardous fluids, chemicals, etc.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Skills in reading, writing, and basic math.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Valid certifications (e.g., ASE) are a plus.
  • Plow experience is a plus

3. Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Utah driver's license and be deemed insurable and able to operate City-owned equipment and vehicles. A commercial driver's license (CDL) may be required.
  • Must be available to work on‑call as necessary.
