Job DutiesThis position is located in the Patient Access unit of the Fiscal Services section of Kona Community Hospital, a 94-bed acute care facility located on the island of Hawaii (Big Island), serving as the West Hawaii Regional Center. The Patient Access unit is responsible for securing demographic and financial information to complete patient registration; collecting data and inputting the information into the hospital's computer system;
securing authorizations and obtaining benefits for patient services; answering the switchboard and operating communication equipment.
Must be available to work shifts as necessary based on hospital operations; services are provided 24/7.
QualificationsEducation:
High school diploma or equivalent.
General
Experience:
Two (2) years of typing, stenographic, clerical work, cashiering, data input, customer service skills, or any combination of these experiences that demonstrate knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, standard office equipment, and the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, carry out clerical procedures, speak and write simply and directly, proofread copy quickly and accurately, operate office equipment, and deal effectively with others in eliciting information and providing service.
Substitution of education for general experience:
An Associate’s or Bachelor’s from an accredited college or university may substitute for all of the general experience.
Specialized
Experience:
Two (2) years performing admission activities in a hospital, including interviewing patients and/or responsible persons to secure information, securing signatures for insurance benefits, arranging payment for costs not covered by insurance, and preparing admitting records.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of patient accounting operations, registration, and intake techniques; third‑party payor requirements, credit and collection practices; federal regulations such as COBRA, Advance Directives, Medicare, Medicaid, JCAHO, OSHA, and HIPAA as they relate to hospital intake and payment; customer service philosophies and practices; knowledge of financial policy and procedures used within the department and business office for resolving patient accounts.
Abilities:
Prioritize work demands with minimal supervision; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; generate reports and provide accurate statistical data; review subordinates’ work and train new employees; perform arithmetic computations; type at 40 WPM; be computer literate in a Windows‑based environment; operate telephone switchboard, teleprocessing terminal, and inter‑communication system; file materials numerically and alphabetically; follow oral and written instructions;
communicate positively and effectively with staff, patients, and families; interview others to obtain pertinent admission information; speak and write English.
