JOB DUTIES :
This position is located in the Health Information Management Department of Kona Community Hospital, a 94-bed acute care facility located on the island of Hawaii, serving as the West Hawaii Regional Center, which also includes Kohala Hospital. It is one of 9 facilities within the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
The Health Information Management Department is responsible for the maintenance and management of quality medical records, proper coding of documentation in compliance with all regulations, and preparation of statistical data as it pertains to hospital patients. This position performs all clerical functions necessary to organize, maintain, and use patient health records, including retrieval of charts from units, scanning medical records, purging of documents, maintenance of archived documents, birth certificate preparation, birth certificate data entry, and answering incoming calls.
THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE:
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.

Knowledge of:
Business English; spelling; arithmetic; the operation and operational maintenance of various office appliances and equipment, including office copying machines; the use of computer equipment and software applications; office practices and procedures. Learn the nature and uses of medical records; medical terminology; health information management classification; filing and index system. Ability to:
Plan and carry out a wide range of clerical functions, including various complex assignments; maintain an effective work pace under periodic deadlines; learn and apply pertinent statutory provisions, rules, regulations, policies and procedures; read and understand manuals and other detailed books of instruction; use of computers, word processing and other software applications; and deal tactfully with others. 1 year work experience which involved performance of a variety of clerical tasks which demonstrated knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, common office appliances and equipment; and the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, carry out procedures in clerical work systems, speak and write simply and directly, compare words and numbers quickly and accurately, operate various kinds of office equipment.
Physical Requirements:
Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily. Disabilities in these or other areas will not automatically result in disqualification.
