Position Summary

The Teacher Assistant/Tutor demonstrates an overall commitment to the policies and procedures of the New Jersey GEAR UP/College Bound program. Employment and continued employment are contingent upon successfully passing the State-mandated criminal background check. Teacher Assistants/Tutors are key members of the academic team, working collaboratively with program instructors to provide academic support that helps students succeed and prepares them for college-level expectations.

The program operates year-round during the Academic Year (fall and spring) and Summer Sessions (July through mid-August). During the Academic Year, classes are held Monday through Thursday (with occasional Fridays) from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and/or 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with 20 Saturday sessions from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. School-day schedules may be adjusted based on participating schools.

Summer Sessions are currently held for up to six weeks, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with occasional Saturday events. Hours may be adjusted as needed.

Essential Functions
  • Assist students in integrating mathematics, reading, and writing skills.
  • Maintain accurate academic records, program statistics related to student resource utilization, and student files.
  • Assist students in developing communication, study, time management, and test-taking skills.
  • Help students build confidence in academic subject areas while strengthening problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
  • Support students in developing mathematics, science, reading, and language skills in preparation for state-mandated assessments, including PARCC, PSAT, SAT, ACT, or equivalent examinations.
  • Attend all required staff development and training sessions.
  • Assist in creating a positive learning environment that encourages student engagement, self-motivation, and academic success.
  • Assist with the administration and evaluation of standardized diagnostic and placement assessments.
  • Implement emergency lesson plans in the absence of an instructor.
Prerequisite Qualifications
  • Completion of the equivalent coursework of a college sophomore (24 credits) and current enrollment in good academic standing, or graduation from an accredited college or university.
  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be waived where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience that specifically prepares the candidate for success in the position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Related work and/or volunteer experience is preferred but not required.
Compensation

$16-$30/hour

At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
