Position Summary
The Mentor demonstrates an overall commitment to the policies and procedures of the New Jersey GEAR UP/College Bound program. Employment and continued employment are contingent upon successfully passing the State-mandated criminal background check. Mentors serve as positive role models by sharing their knowledge, skills, and experiences to foster the academic and personal growth of New Jersey GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)/College Bound participants.
Mentors work with program participants through one-on-one mentoring, group mentoring, tutoring, workshops, classes, and field trips to encourage academic achievement, college readiness, and personal development. The program operates year-round during the Academic Year (fall and spring) and Summer Sessions (July through mid-August). During the Academic Year, activities are held Monday through Thursday (with occasional Fridays) from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and/or 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with 20 Saturday sessions from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. School-day schedules may be adjusted based on participating schools.
Summer Sessions are currently held for up to six weeks, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with occasional Saturday events. Additional after-school and during-school hours may be available based on program needs, and work hours may be adjusted as necessary.

- Participate in all NJ College Bound Mentor Training sponsored by the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education and the Consortium.
- Provide mentoring support and guidance to encourage participants to pursue and succeed in higher education.
- Meet regularly with assigned participants in accordance with the established work schedule.
- Assist mentees in developing the personal, academic, and life skills necessary for success.
- Help assigned participants establish realistic academic and career goals and expectations.
- Assist counselors in completing and reviewing each participant's Personal Education Plan (PEP).
- Accompany mentees on field trips and other program-sponsored activities.
- Conduct and/or assist with workshops focused on life skills, college readiness, and educational planning.
