Electronics Specialist Senior / Aviation Aids (Open)
The Aeronautics Division at the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a motivated, self‑directed aviation enthusiast to install, maintain, and repair complex electronic equipment required for aviation navigation and weather reporting systems. This role is based in Kearney, NE.
Job Duties- Use schematic diagrams, blueprint drawings, maintenance manuals, and factory publications to operate, modify, test, and repair complex electronic equipment.
- Perform construction, installation, preventive maintenance inspection, analysis of meter readings, troubleshooting, repair, or replacement of malfunctioning parts or equipment.
- Acquire training or instruction on systems such as VHF Omnidirectional Radio Range (VOR), Non directional Radio Beacon (NDB), Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), and Automated Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) to obtain and maintain required certifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Electronics Specialist Aviation Aids: Associate’s degree from a vocational technical program in electronics or two years of related experience; possession of a General Radiotelephone Operator License (PG) issued by the Federal Communications Commission within three months of employment.
- Electronics Specialist Senior / Aviation Aids: Associate’s degree from a vocational technical program in electronics and related experience with navigational aid equipment. Additional years of experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year‑for‑year basis; possession of a General Radiotelephone Operator License (PG) and an FAA letter of verification for AWOS.
- Five or more years of experience in electronics.
- Solid concept of math and algebra.
- FCC General Radio Telephone Operator’s license (or applicant must acquire within three months of employment).
- Valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
- Availability for overnight travel multiple times a month and requirement for regular and reliable attendance.
- Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and practices of electronic repair and construction work.
- Proficiency with circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software applications.
- Understanding of FCC rules and regulations and air navigation principles.
- Ability to establish work priorities, repair and construct electronic circuits and systems, perform mathematical and algebraic calculations, communicate verbally and in writing.
- Skill in operating, repairing, and calibrating test equipment and troubleshooting electronic systems, modules, and circuit cards to the component level.
- Read and understand schematics, construction plans, and drawings.
