The average number of births is approximately 50 per month, totaling around 600 per year. The required certifications include BLS, ACLS, and NRP. FHM certification is preferred. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:3 for couplets and 1:1 for laboring patients.
The unit utilizes the OBIXEMR system for charting. A charge nurse and a lactation counselor are available on the unit. There is 1 unit secretary/notary and 1 maternity educator. Nurse aides/OB techs are ideally available during both day and night shifts depending on census. There is a weekend requirement of every 3rd weekend, which could potentially become every other depending on unit needs.
Staff is expected to cover one major and one minor holiday. Scrub color is provided by the hospital. Telemetry is centrally monitored. The unit does not have vents, and an OB/neonatologist is not in-house. Anesthesia is on call with a 20-minute response time. OB is also on call. An IV team is available 24/7. Strong IV skills are a requirement for candidates.
RT services are available 24/7. Pharmacy is available 24/7 as well. On-call coverage starts at 9 PM, with a goal to be 24/7 within one year. Shifts operate from 6 PM to 6 AM. C-section circulating experience is mandatory. Floating to NICU is required, but only for feeders and growers. The unit has a specific orientation process lasting 1-2 days.
Mothers labor and deliver in the same bed, as there is no nursery on the unit. Newborns stay in bassinets next to their mothers. The department emphasizes skin-to-skin care. There is a strong focus on teamwork within the department. In April 2018, the unit was honored for its designation as a 'Safe Sleep Champion' by the Department of Health & Human Services.
