Job Summary

The long term care (LTC) Certified Medication Assistant (CMA) serves as a caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse. Provides age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident per plan of care. Assists with basic health care needs including daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psycho-social support and other personal care.

May assist with transferring, re-positioning, and walking using appropriate transfer techniques and equipment. Provides range of motion and passive exercises. Assists with food preparation and dining to create a positive dining experience. May assist residents with meals and snacks; provide water and supplements as appropriate.

Administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within the scope of practice defined by state regulations. Documents outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary. Communicates changing condition, medication follow-up, and care-related concerns with the charge nurse. Collects non-invasive body fluid specimens and gathers vital signs. Provides housekeeping and laundry services to assist residents in keeping living areas clean and operational.

Supports wellness and recreational programs and encourages resident participation. May participate in departmental/organization committees and task forces as needed.

Qualifications
  • High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum age of 18 preferred. Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long-term care preferred.
  • Completes yearly department-specific competency testing and maintains continuing education credits (minimum 12 hours annually) as required by state regulations. Maintains department-specific certifications. May require valid driver's license and auto insurance when applicable.
  • Iowa: CNA certification with the State Board of Nursing; must be maintained. Successful completion of state-approved CMA course after CNA certification.
  • Minnesota:
    Nursing assistant certification, 75-hour course, and registration with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. Successful completion of state-approved Trained Medication Assistant course.
  • North Dakota: CNA certification with the State Board of Nursing; CMA course after CNA certification. If in Assisted Living/Basics, Medication Assistant I; if in skilled nursing, Medication Assistant II.
  • South Dakota: CMA certification through a state-approved course and maintained with the State Board of Nursing.
  • For all Good Samaritan and Sanford nursing facilities:
    Must hold CMA/TMA certification or be eligible to obtain within 120 days; active CNA registration in state of practice or ability to obtain.
