The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long-term care (LTC). Provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to an assigned resident under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The CNA delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per the care plan, and is expected to follow infection prevention and control policies and Personal Protective Equipment use.
Responsibilities include basic health‑care needs such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, psychosocial support, and assistance with transfers, repositioning, and walking using proper techniques and equipment. The CNA assists with food preparation and dining, creating a positive dining experience, and provides water and supplements as appropriate. Duties also encompass documenting resident interactions, communicating changes in condition to the charge nurse, collecting non-invasive body‑fluid specimens, housekeeping and laundry services, and supporting wellness and recreational programs.
Participation in departmental committees and task forces may be required.
- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state certified CNA within four months of date into the position. Certification provided by the facility.
- Complete yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintain continuing education credits (minimum 12 hours annually).
- Maintain all department‑specific required certifications.
- When applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- In some states, may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a motor vehicle report, proof of valid driver’s license, and medical qualification for driving functions.
