Responsibilities
- Assist in the performance of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system under direct supervision.
- Operate standard motorized equipment, including a 5‑yard dump truck and a flatbed truck, to haul materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris.
- Operate small equipment such as a brush chipper, pneumatic rollers (≤ 4 tons), broom sweepers, trailer‑mounted pipe washers, and a standard dump truck equipped with a snowplow attachment and sand spreader or brine sprayer for snow and ice removal.
- Perform manual labor duties: clear rights‑of‑way, install and repair flat‑sheet signs and sign assemblies, maintain sign foundations, manage vegetation to improve visibility, clean drainage ditches and pipes, repair shoulders, patch potholes, make base repairs, and pave driveways.
- Flag traffic during road repairs to control flow and protect workers, the general public, and equipment.
- Remove litter, debris, and dead animals from roadways and rights‑of‑way.
- Assist in operating heavier equipment: tandem‑axle dump trucks, front‑end loaders, belt loaders, tractors with ditchers, specialized mowers, steel‑wheel rollers, trailer‑mounted injection patchers, and backhoes, with varying levels of formal and informal instruction.
- Conduct and document pre‑trip equipment/vehicle inspections in accordance with department rules, policies, and procedures for fleet safety.
- Operate and maintain electric/gas‑powered tools in various phases of roadway maintenance.
- Assist in emergency or inclement weather operations and support on‑call personnel; may be required to work extended hours or shifts.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- No minimum training or experience requirements.
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
- Must attain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.
- Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping; manipulate objects up to 50 lb.
- Walk for extended periods and traverse rough, uneven terrain; work in close proximity to motoring traffic and environmental hazards.
- May work outside normal hours, during inclement weather, or in emergencies.
- Frequently exposed to outside weather in all conditions, noise, oil or grease.
