Required Training and Education
  • Have a Utah Special Education teaching license
  • Have an out-of-state Special Education teaching license
  • Have at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university and already been approved for an Associate License through the Utah State Board of Education in Special Education
  • Have finished a degree and be accepted into one of the following university Special Education programs:
    Weber State University, University of Utah, Utah State University, Southern Utah State University, Western Governor’s University, Brigham Young University, Westminster College, Utah Tech University
  • Must successfully enroll in one of the in‑state Special Education programs above and be approved for the Associate Educator License program through the Utah State Board of Education within six months of hire; failure to obtain the license within that time may jeopardize ongoing employment.
Job Summary

Under the direction of the school principal, the classroom teacher is responsible for creating a positive learning environment where students develop critical thinking, problem‑solving, lifelong learning, and citizenship skills. Teachers maintain a safe environment; establish rapport with students, parents, and colleagues; motivate students and differentiate curriculum using research‑based methods. Proficiency‑Based Grading is implemented in student evaluations.

Essential Functions
  • Teach core content areas outlined in the USBE’s Core Curriculum and adopt other approved learning activities.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt curriculum to each student’s needs.
  • Translate lesson plans into productive student learning experiences.
  • Use computers and other technological supports in instruction.
  • Supervise students indoors and outdoors, including recess duty and gym activities, in all weather and air conditions.
  • Maintain standards of student behavior through organization and appropriate discipline strategies.
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, maintain records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Implement Proficiency‑Based Learning and the Granite Way.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences, calls, e‑mail, student planners, the school website, and other appropriate means.
  • Collaborate with other professional staff regarding academic and personal growth.
  • Maintain attendance, physical presence, and timeliness.
  • Create an effective learning environment with displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive classroom and campus environment.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and educator evaluation procedures per district guidelines.
  • Administer student attendance policies, standardized tests, and participate in faculty committees and student activity sponsorship.
  • Select and requisition books and instruction materials; maintain inventory records.
  • Model professional and ethical standards with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Understand and adhere to laws, district policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain effective relationships with students, parents, school staff, and community.
  • Demonstrate professional ethics per the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission.
  • Be a positive role model.
