The Dog Health Fund is dedicated to helping dog parents access essential veterinary care by providing financial assistance, resources and community support. Our primary focus is to assist low to moderate income households in Jersey City and surrounding areas to ensure that dogs receive health treatment regardless of financial barriers.

Our mission is to reduce dog suffering, prevent unnecessary surrenders or euthanasia caused by inability to pay and strengthen the human–animal bond within our community.

Mission

The Dog Health Fund provides financial assistance and supportive services to low-moderate income dog owners facing unaffordable veterinary expenses, ensuring that all dogs receive the care they need to live healthy and safe lives.

Position Overview

As the Board Treasurer, you will oversee the financial management and health of the organization. You will work closely with the Board President and fellow board members to ensure fiscal responsibility, compliance, and strategic alignment with our mission to protect our best pups.

  • Financial Oversight — Monitor the organization’s financial performance, maintain accurate financial records, and present quarterly reports to the Board of Directors.
  • Budgeting — Lead the annual budget creation process in collaboration with leadership.
  • Compliance & Reporting — Ensure timely and accurate filing of required tax forms (e.g., IRS Form 990) and compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations.
  • Banking & Reconciliation — In coordination with the Board President, oversee bank accounts, reconcile monthly statements, and manage income and expenses through our Wave software (training will be provided as needed).
  • Strategic Planning — Provide financial insights and advice to guide the Fund’s growth and fundraising strategies.
Qualifications
  • A strong background in accounting, finance, or business management (nonprofit accounting/bookkeeping experience is highly preferred but not required).
  • Familiarity with financial software (e.g., Quick Books) and spreadsheets (Excel/Google Sheets). We are currently using Wave's free nonprofit software for our bookkeeping.
  • Deep passion for animal welfare and canine health.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial board members.
  • Strong organizational skills and high ethical standards.
Time Commitment
  • Approximately 5–10 hours per month.
  • Attendance at quarterly board meetings (currently conducted virtually).
