Job Description

Summary: Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lesson materials to match student ability levels. Work in self‑contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Model KISD core organizational beliefs and values; perform duties effectively and efficiently for the purpose of supporting and contributing to high student achievement.
  • Provide program support and service delivery; communicate effectively within and across teams and participate in cross‑functional work groups.
  • Maintain a commitment to the District mission; model District expectations through personal leadership and actively support the efforts of others to achieve District goals.
  • Collaborate with students, parents, and other staff to develop IEPs through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
  • Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and provide written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Implement instruction in academic and adaptive skills, using strategies that accommodate various learning styles and disabilities.
  • Conduct assessment of student learning styles and plan appropriate strategies, activities, materials, and equipment.
  • Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student.
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula and assist Special Education students in regular classes with assignments.
  • Participate in ARD Committee meetings regularly.
  • Participate in selection of materials, equipment, and other instructional media.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned; sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
  • Provide or supervise personal care as stated in IEP (diapering, medical care, feeding).
  • Be a positive role model for students.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job‑related skills.
  • Comply with State, District, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Develop and maintain systems for retrieval of information in support of all programs; compile, maintain, file, and secure all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents.
  • Pursue professional development activities for self and assigned staff; ensure they are aligned with District goals and initiatives and current professional research.
  • Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives.
  • Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
  • Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
