SUMMARY:

Provide Special Education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

Essential functions pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act may include the characteristic duties and responsibilities listed below. This list is not exhaustive.

• Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) through the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process for each student assigned.
• Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and provide written evidence of preparation as required.
• Implement instruction in academic and adaptive skills, using strategies that accommodate various learning styles and disabilities.
• Conduct assessment of student learning styles and plan appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment.
• Present subject matter effectively according to IEP guidelines, employing a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology.
• Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist Special Education students in regular classes.
• Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
• Participate in the selection of materials, equipment, and instructional media.

• Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
• Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
• Provide or supervise personal care, including diapering, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in the IEP.
• Be a positive role model for students.

• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
• Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to the IEP.
• Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the student handbook.
• Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Compile, maintain, and file all required reports and records.

• Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

• Participate in staff development activities to improve job‑related skills.
• Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
• Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

• Maintain confidentiality.
• Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations for special education teachers.
• Develop and maintain systems for retrieval of information in support of all programs, including filing physical and computerized reports.
• Pursue professional development activities for self and assigned staff aligned with district goals and current research.
• Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and written directives.
• Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university.
• Valid Texas teaching certificate with required Special Education endorsements for subject and level assigned.
• Valid Texas teacher certificate in English as a Second Language (preferred and will be required for contract renewal).

• Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience.
