Job DescriptionSUMMARY: Provide Special Education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in a team and/or departmental capacity as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Model KISD core beliefs, values, and commit to district mission through personal leadership.
- Provide program support, communicate effectively within and across teams, and participate in cross‑functional work groups.
- Support district goals by modeling expectations and actively supporting others.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Strategies
- Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
- Implement an instructional or skill‑development program for assigned students and provide written evidence of preparation as required.
- Assess student learning styles and plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment based on those styles.
- Present subject matter effectively and in accordance with IEP guidelines, using a variety of instructional techniques and media, including technology.
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula and assist Special Education students in regular classes.
- Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
- Participate in the selection of materials, equipment, and other instructional media.
Student Growth and Development
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned.
- Be a positive role model for students.
Classroom Management and Organization
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional needs of students.
- Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behaviour according to IEP.
- Manage student behaviour in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and handbook.
- Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Compile, maintain, and file all required reports and documents.
Communication
- Establish and maintain professional relationships and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
Professional Growth and Development
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job‑related skills.
- Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Other Responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for Special Education teachers.
- Develop and maintain systems for retrieval of information to support all programs.
- Conduct professional development activities for self and assigned staff aligned with district goals.
- Comply with all policies, procedures, legal requirements, and directives.
- Apply the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
- Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with required Special Education endorsements for subject and level assigned.
- Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience.
- Knowledge of core academic subject assigned.
- Knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behaviour.
- Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Direct the work of Instructional Aides.
