Reports To: Safety Manager
Position Summary
The Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting and maintaining a safe and compliant work environment within a mining operation. This position ensures compliance with MSHA regulations, delivers required safety training, conducts incident investigations, and supports occupational health and industrial hygiene initiatives. The successful candidate will serve as a subject matter expert in mine safety and regulatory compliance while promoting a strong safety culture throughout the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct and coordinate MSHA-required safety training for employees and contractors.
- Maintain active MSHA Blue Card certification and training records.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and company health and safety requirements.
- Serve as an MSHA compliance resource and support regulatory inspections and audits.
- Participate in and lead incident and accident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action tracking.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Support industrial hygiene monitoring and occupational health initiatives.
- Conduct workplace inspections, hazard assessments, and risk evaluations.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and safety-related documentation.
- Promote employee engagement and participation in health and safety programs.
- Support emergency response planning and preparedness activities.
Qualifications
Required
- 5-10 years of mining safety experience.
- MSHA Blue Card holder.
- Extensive knowledge of MSHA regulations and compliance requirements.
- Experience conducting safety training and safety program administration.
- Incident investigation experience, including root cause analysis.
- Knowledge of industrial hygiene principles and practices.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Preferred
- Mine Rescue Team training and participation experience.
- Additional safety certifications related to mining, occupational health, or industrial hygiene.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of mine health and safety regulations and best practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees, supervisors, managers, and regulatory agencies.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to analyze incidents, identify trends, and implement corrective actions.
- Ability to work independently while supporting cross-functional teams.
- Commitment to fostering a proactive safety culture.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a mining environment, including surface and underground locations as required.
- Ability to perform field inspections and access active work areas.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
