Overview

WorkSafeBC's Prevention Services division plays a critical role in providing compassionate and responsive service towards our mission of preventing workplace injury, illness, and death and supporting workers through fair compensation and effective rehabilitation.

Working under direction of the Director, OHS Investigations, as the Manager, Occupational Health, and Safety (OHS) Investigations, you'll be responsible for managing the operations of the OHS Investigations team within the Prevention Services Division. In this role, you will provide leadership and direction to assigned staff and be responsible for managing the activities of the assigned area to ensure the effective delivery of services and implementation of WorkSafeBC and divisional policies and programs.

You'll lead a team that conducts thorough and detailed investigations of workplace serious injuries, fatalities, and near misses to determine causation and contributing factors to prevent similar events from occurring. This includes providing direction to and leadership of both prosecution and regulatory investigation teams.

You'll help ensure B.C. workers go home safely at the end of their workday.

What you'll do

In partnership with department leadership, establish and maintain investigative processes while ensuring compliance with quality assurance and quality control.

  • Manage the operations of the OHS Investigations team in order to ensure effective delivery of services to employers, industry and WorkSafeBC stakeholders, as well as internal departments.
  • Ensure the effective delivery of OHS Investigations by developing and implementing departmental business plans to support and achieve the Division's strategic objectives and performance goals.
  • Monitor and adjust activities to meet business plan objectives and to respond to changing conditions.
  • Ensure that WorkSafeBC and divisional policies, procedures and standards are appropriately implemented within assigned area.
  • Provide advice, guidance, and direction to assigned staff and others on policies, business plans and operational matters relating to OHS Investigations, including enforcement.
  • Maintain integrity of investigations, adhere to business rules and, major case management protocols, case management strategy and ensure timeliness of investigations.
  • Ensure investigative team understands and follows investigative process to ensure investigations are not compromised and conclusions are upheld.
  • Plan and implement business improvement projects within the department/Prevention Division.

  • Be responsible for risk management and ensure investigative processes are reviewed with a continuous improvement approach.
  • Develop and maintain strong partnerships with external stakeholders including the RCMP and municipal police agencies, Coroner's Office, and other investigative and regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee and lead prosecution investigation.
  • Promote a service-oriented approach in providing services to external and internal customers. Identifies, follows up, and/or responds to clients' needs and areas of concern, taking appropriate action to quickly resolve issues.
  • Participate as a member of the divisional management team in strategy development and business planning activities and provide input into business initiative development, planning and implementation as required.
  • Plan and lead the implementation of business improvement projects within the department and Prevention Division.
  • Lead and direct assigned staff in maintaining high levels of service and in achieving divisional priorities and objectives.
  • Manage the financial resources within the allocated budget.
