Refining Inspector

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Kenai Refinery is seeking a full‑time Refinery Inspector for the Inspection Group in the Maintenance Department. The selected candidate will serve as the primary contact for support associated with fixed equipment integrity issues on process equipment and piping. The Inspector will ensure fixed equipment complies with state regulations, refining standards, and specifications, working closely with operations and maintenance to identify and mitigate mechanical integrity risks.

Schedule:

Monday–Thursday 7:00 AM–5:30 PM. After‑hours calls are required several times a year, and support of Turnaround (TAR) events every three years.

• Perform and/or coordinate fixed equipment inspections, including process equipment and piping, required by site mechanical integrity and inspection programs.
• Develop and execute inspection plans and life‑cycle management for refining equipment based on service, design, condition, jurisdictional requirements, temporary repairs, equipment replacements, TAR dates, and inspection history; prioritize and plan work within the assigned area team.
• Provide scope and supporting documentation (justification, timing, preparations, etc.) for fixed equipment mechanical integrity work to Maintenance (Routine, Major Maintenance, Turnarounds, etc.).
• Document inspection records, findings, and recommendations in Marathon’s Inspection Data Management System (IDMS); complete all required documentation and interpret and apply industry and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practice (RAGAGEP) codes and specifications.
• Develop, revise, and maintain comprehensive inspection procedures, applicable guidelines, and work instructions.
• Understand critical process variables that affect equipment reliability, identify gaps, and lead gap‑closure efforts.
• Generate and provide repair/upgrade recommendations based on findings, options, and risk assessments in conjunction with the area team and other departments on site.
• Train in the required areas of responsibility as identified by the Inspection Supervisor.
• Serve as Program Manager for special emphasis projects supporting the site mechanical integrity program.
• Review and apply Management of Change (MOC) requirements and ensure all Process Safety Management (PSM) elements are implemented.

• High school diploma or GED (obtained before start date).
• Both API 510 and API 570 certifications.
• Minimum of three (3) years of inspection experience in Fixed Equipment, Reliability, and/or Maintenance in a refinery, petro‑chemical, or other heavy related industry.
• Familiarity with Risk Based Inspection (RBI) strategy based on API‑580/581.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Ability to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator) and physically perform all tasks in the field.
• Valid driver’s license (accepted by MPC).
• Steady employment history.
• Ability to obtain a TWIC Card.
• Legally authorized to work in the US without future visa sponsorship.
• Travel requirement is 5% or less.
• Availability to work Monday–Thursday 7 AM–5:30 PM with after‑hours calls as required.

• Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Mechanical Technology, Corrosion Technology, Welding Technology, or Non-Destructive Technology (NDT).
• API 653, 571, 580, and/or 581 certifications.
• CWI, AWS, or SW certifications.
• ANST Level II certifications (UTT, RTFI, MT, PT).
• More than three (3) years of experience as a refinery inspector working with industry‑related codes.
• Extensive experience and understanding of RBI inspection strategies based on API-580/581.
• Experience with IDMS software such as APM and RBMI.
• Relocation may be available.
