Academic Advisor

This position serves as an academic advisor and degree program evaluator for students enrolled at Bastyr University.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Advise students on their degree progress, academic issues and university policy issues as they apply to students and their degrees.
  • Perform evaluations of students' progress toward academic degrees by completing and reviewing degree audits regularly.
  • Perform graduation evaluations for students who apply for graduation; produce graduation letters stating exactly what remains for students to complete their degree requirements. Monitor those students with respect to degree requirements to see that they are making appropriate progress.
  • Support Registrar's Office in general during registration, add and drop periods, grading and other peak times.
  • Follow up on missing documents for students who were admitted provisionally and those who have work in progress at the time of their admission. Monitor undergraduates' progress. Evaluate all students for clinic entry eligibility.
  • Keep current on changes in NCCAOM/NPLEX policies, and advise students on NCCAOM/NPLEX exam and licensing issues and procedures. Send exam verification and graduation information to NCCAOM and other licensing agencies.
  • Other Responsibilities:

    • Help with office operations as needed, such as ordering supplies and performing various other tasks.

    Qualifications and Requirements:

    Knowledge:

    • Must be familiar with academic administrative functions and procedures.
    • Must be familiar with academic degree structure.
    • Must be familiar with Bastyr's academic degree programs and academic policies.

    Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively (both verbally and in writing) academic policies and procedures.
    • Ability to work in closed quarters and relay confidential and sensitive information in an appropriate fashion.
    • Ability to concentrate, remain focused and on-task with frequent interruptions and distractions, which are a reality in our close quarters, cubicle work environment.
    • Ability to communicate gently but firmly information to students that might delay their academic progress and/or graduation.
    • Ability to discern student issues during advising sessions and address those issues or refer them to the appropriate resource.
    • Ability and willingness to learn, interpret and input data on an integrated, PC-based computer system for student records management.
    • Word processing skills for producing letters and information tables.
    • Ability to work cooperatively and collegially with faculty members, chairs, and other staff members, directing them in the application of policies and procedures and correcting them when they've relayed incorrect information.

    Experience:

    • One year of experience in academic advising preferred. Or two years experience in student services, or university administration.
    • One year of experience in work environment where attention to detail is critical.
