Heavy Equipment Mechanic
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system, in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.
OVERVIEWOF
THE ROLE
The Mechanic – 3 is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and overhauling heavy equipment and complex vehicle systems (e.g. engines, hydraulics, transmissions). The position involves using both computerized and manual diagnostic tools and applying extensive mechanical and electronic systems knowledge. The role also includes performing field repairs or equipment operation and conducting light equipment maintenance (e.g. small engine tools). Additional tasks include test‑driving vehicles and handling sandbags when necessary.
QUALIFICATIONSThree years of experience or training as a mechanic.

JOB DUTIES- Disassembles, diagnoses, overhauls, rebuilds, and/or repairs heavy equipment or complex systems such as engines, transmissions, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, gear reduction systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, brake systems, exhaust emission control systems, etc.
- Assists Mechanic Supervisor A and Mechanic 4 in providing instruction, guidance and assistance to Mechanic
2. Assigns portions of work to lower-level mechanics that are assisting in the accomplishment of major repairs. Assists in training lower-level mechanics in the field on diesel and hydraulic engine repair. - May also be responsible for repair and maintenance of equipment powered by small internal combustion engines such as lawnmowers, string trimmers, outboard motors, etc.
- Incorporates visual and audible inspection with the use of a wide range of computerized test equipment, such as electronic scanners, engine analyzers, dynamo meters, exhaust analyzers, oscilloscopes, and various testers and meters, as well as non-computerized test equipment.
Appointment Type: This appointment type can be filled as Probational, Promotional, Lateral Transfer, Detail to Special Duty or Job Appointment.
Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.
