CMT Technician – Soils (Field Technician II)

This role offers the opportunity to join a Building & Construction team as a Field Technician II focused on construction materials testing with an emphasis on soils and concrete. You will perform field and site-based testing, project-specific observations, and site assessments to support major civil and commercial construction projects. Working closely with general contractors and project teams, you will operate testing equipment, interpret results, and provide clear, detailed reports that help ensure the safety, quality, and performance of new developments and existing assets.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of construction materials testing activities, including field and laboratory testing, project-specific observations, and site assessment duties for soils and concrete.
  • Operate testing equipment to conduct soil and concrete tests, including tasks such as soil sampling, soil compaction testing, concrete sampling, and concrete testing in accordance with project specifications and standards.
  • Review and work from drawings, specifications, and diagrams to understand project requirements and ensure all testing and inspection tasks are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Provide clear, detailed, and timely data assessments through written reports, documenting test methods, results, observations, and any nonconformances or issues identified on site.
  • Coordinate daily with the General Contractor to understand the scope of work for each day, including scheduled pours, soil work, and other activities requiring testing or inspection.
  • Arrive at job sites at the designated time for day shift work, connect with the General Contractor to confirm the day's schedule, and plan testing activities accordingly.
  • Set up and perform testing for scheduled activities such as concrete pours, ensuring all sampling and testing procedures comply with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with project stakeholders, including general contractors and internal team members, to provide updates on testing progress, issues, and results.
  • Check in with the General Contractor at the end of each day to confirm that all required testing and inspection tasks are complete and that the day's work is fully wrapped up.
  • Report back to internal leadership at the end of the day to confirm work completion, submit reports, and receive assignments for upcoming projects or next-day work.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously, ranging from small assignments to large-scale developments such as plants, warehouses, commercial buildings, and institutional facilities.
  • Apply geotechnical and civil engineering principles in the field to interpret test results, evaluate soil and concrete conditions, and support quality assurance decisions.
  • Maintain testing equipment in proper working condition, follow safety procedures at all times, and adhere to all applicable occupational safety requirements.
  • Use basic math, calculators, and computer tools to perform calculations, record data, and prepare electronic documentation and reports.
  • Contribute to a strong team culture by working collaboratively, demonstrating reliability, and upholding an honor-system approach to timekeeping and daily assignments.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 years of construction materials testing (CMT) experience, including field work on soils and concrete.
  • ACI Concrete certification (mandatory) with demonstrated experience in concrete sampling and testing.
  • Hands-on soil sampling experience, including tasks such as soil boring, soil compaction testing, and soil analysis (ICC Soil Certification preferred).
  • OSHA 10 certification required; OSHA 30 certification required for individuals serving as Lead Inspectors.
  • Effective communication skills in written, verbal, and listening formats, with the ability to interact professionally with general contractors, project teams, and internal colleagues.
  • Solid interpersonal skills to collaborate with field technicians, project managers, and clients in a professional and respectful manner.
