Job
Develops and applies practical skills and learns tools to assist with identifying cyber security concerns affecting campus systems. Learns how to create, monitor and maintain safeguards to ensure the cyber security of campus systems. Please note this position is an apprenticeship within Kennesaw State University Information Technology Services department; it does not guarantee permanent employment with the University.
Department Specific Tasks and Responsibilities- Collaborates with UITS team members on addressing SIEM alerts and reports
- Collaborates with Office of Cybersecurity team members on improving security posture in key areas, such as vulnerability management, email security, and network security
- Assists with cybersecurity incident investigations
- Collaborates with UITS team members and KSU departments to address security incidents and fulfill service requests
- Collaborates with cybersecurity team members on initiatives and recommendations for improvements
- Learns and utilizes security tools for continuous monitoring and analysis of system activity to identify malicious activity
- Assists with analyzing security alerts from various sources within the enterprise
- Assists with determining possible causes of security alerts
- Provides customer service while addressing Office of Cybersecurity tasks
- Educational Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent
- Required Experience: No experience required; on-the-job training provided

Qualifications:
Student currently enrolled seeking a degree - Preferred Experience: Working knowledge of enterprise security tools, such as a SIEM, Vulnerability Management Solution, or Application Security Solution
- Abilities: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities – Able to handle multiple tasks or projects at one time meeting assigned deadlines
Able to analyze large data sets to identify security concerns and recommendations.
Able to articulate solutions to complex problems.
- Will acquire experience with security tools
- Will acquire experience with collaborating with multiple university departments
- Will acquire experience with regulations pertaining to storage and handling of confidential and sensitive data, to include PII, FERPA, regulated research, etc.
- Will acquire experience with incident response processes
- Will acquire experience with computer networking concepts, communications, and protocols
- Will acquire experience with Intrusion Detection System (IDS)/Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) tools, technologies, and applications
- Will acquire experience with recognizing and categorizing types of vulnerabilities and associated attacks
- Will acquire experience with security information and event management tools and processes
- Learn to identify systemic security issues based on data analysis and collaboration with functional users / administrators
- Learn about common attack vectors
- Learn operating system command-line tools and network tools to identify vulnerabilities
- Learn about adversarial tactics, techniques, and procedures
- Learn about cyber-attack stages (e.g., reconnaissance, scanning, enumeration, gaining access, escalation of privileges, maintaining access, network exploitation, covering tracks)
- Learn about performing root cause analysis
- Learn to conduct vulnerability scans and recognize vulnerabilities in security systems
- Learn to interpret information collected by network tools (e.g., Nslookup, Ping, and Trace route)
- Learn to accurately define incidents, problems, and events in the ticketing system
Interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills.
Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e., Microsoft Office suite).
Attention to detail and follow up skills.
Customer service skills and phone and e‑mail etiquette.
