GENERAL NATURE OF WORK
The purpose of this classification is to provide lead guidance and direction to an assigned crew and serves as the primary skilled operator of heavy equipment used in the construction, maintenance, landscaping, and grounds keeping of City streets/roads, rights of way and other public areas.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and coordinate daily work activities of assigned crew or co-workers: confer with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organize tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitor status of work in progress and inspect completed work; confer with co-workers, assist with complex/problem situations, and provide technical expertise; assist with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment;
assist with supervision of co-workers by reporting employee problems and providing input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations. - Adhere to established safety procedures; monitor work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flag and direct traffic and place markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; wear protective gear.
- Drive or operate a variety of varied purpose equipment in the maintenance and repair of City streets, rights of way, parks or other areas as assigned; perform driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including day/night hours, in congested traffic, and in adverse weather conditions.
- Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; load and unload equipment and supplies; report all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; complete and maintain inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation.
- Transport, load and unload various materials and equipment used in projects.
- Perform general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas; monitor equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; report faulty equipment.
- Respond to emergency calls during inclement weather or other emergency situations.
- Perform routine maintenance and repair tasks, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, laws, policies, and standards of quality and safety; utilize precautionary safety equipment and monitor work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Maintain traffic control devices and street signs; design, create, purchase and/or install traffic control devices, street signs and other signage; replace or repair damaged devices and signs; design and set up temporary traffic control equipment; create and apply decals for City vehicles and equipment; maintain inventory of materials and supplies; purchase materials and supplies and process invoices; maintain GIS mapping inventory of all devices and signs;
conduct related traffic studies, recording data and preparing and submitting related reports. - Communicate with supervisor, City employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio; provide information and assistance; take and relay messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; return calls as necessary.
- Receive, prepare, or complete various forms and documentation, including project updates, work schedules, activity reports, work orders, time cards, maintenance reports, spray records, diagrams, maps, manuals, reference materials, and other documents; review, complete, process forward, or retain as appropriate.
- Operate one or more of the following: knuckle boon, sweeper, bucket truck, motor graders, scraper, excavator, compactor, front-end loader, track hoe, backhoe, tractor/trailer and lowboy, milling machine, paving machine, boring machine, jack hammer, dump truck, mowers, snow plow/salt spreader, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
- Operate a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, design, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
