Job Summary:
As a leading LTL freight carrier since 1931, Estes offers drivers in‑cab ergonomics and technology that focus on driver comfort and meet Electronic Logging Device (ELD) requirements. Line Haul Extraboard Drivers travel away from home for an average of five days between service centers.
Responsibilities:
- Operate all types of equipment and perform all safety functions.
- Safely operate a tractor/trailer in compliance with company, federal, state, and local laws, including FMCSA regulations.
- Adhere to FMCSA requirements for holders of a Commercial Driver’s License.
- Maintain required records in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Comply with all requirements for safe and legal transportation of hazardous materials.
- Ensure security of equipment and cargo.
- Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections to ensure safe working conditions of the tractor and trailer.
- Check gauges and visual indicators for malfunctions, ensure seals or locks on trailers, and inspect vehicles before and during trips.
- Promptly report maintenance problems to Fleet Services or supervision.
- Verify unit numbers against paperwork and report discrepancies.
- Use in‑cab technology, including electronic logs, as required.
- Adapt to different schedules and dock work based on business needs.
- Provide professional and courteous service to customers and the general public.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Perform any and all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, General Educational Degree (GED), or equivalent experience.
- 21 years of age required per FMCSA regulations (1 year driving experience required).
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
- Registered with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Reside within 75 miles of the domiciled Service Center or work assignment.
- Haz Mat, Tanker, and Doubles endorsements required (LCV requirement may apply).
- Good employment history preferred.
- Physical abilities: standing, lifting, twisting, turning, climbing a ladder, etc.
- Capable of dropping/hooking and coupling trailers, including cranking landing gear and pulling a 5th‑wheel pin (~65 lbs).
- Ability to provide an acceptable MVR.
- Familiar with state motor‑vehicle laws and FMCSA rules and regulations.
- Pass a FMCSA‑required medical exam.
- Pass a road test.
- Understand and speak English as required by FMCSA.
- Lift approximately 70 lbs or more, if required.
- Drive all routes and all terrains, including mountains, steep roads, curvy highways, bridges, tunnels, etc.
- Operate in all weather conditions, including rain, wind, snow, freezing temperatures, hot weather.
- Operate all safety and operational functions of equipment, including chaining tires, driving manual/automatic transmissions.
- Follow company policies, rules, procedures, and Code of Conduct.
- Interact well with others and work independently or in a team setting.
- Work under tight time constraints in a high‑volume environment with multiple priorities.
- Respond well to questions and read, interpret, and comply with written information such as safety rules, procedure manuals, and maintenance instructions.
- Pass pre‑employment drug screen, random drug and/or alcohol tests, and criminal‑history background check.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
