Position #: SS23196. Full-time 1.0 FTE. Kennewick, Washington.

Qualifications Required
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.
  • Endorsement in Special Education and Orientation & Mobility and Visually Impaired.
  • Training as a Teacher for the Visually Impaired and having passed the Unified English Braille (UEB) or the National Literary Braille Competency Test.
  • Working knowledge of IDEA – federal requirements.
  • Verifiable successful experience or training in working with children and their families, in the areas of vision, compensatory skills, orientation and mobility assistance.
  • Training and experience in provision of services for students with visual impairments.
  • Certified training or experience in Functional Vision Assessments and Braille instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and flexibly with others.
  • Satisfactory evaluations.
Qualifications Preferred
  • Knowledge of state laws regarding education of disabled students.
  • Training as Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist.
  • Experience in developmentally appropriate practices, whole language approaches, curriculum adaptation, use of higher level thinking skill, learning styles and alternative assessment techniques.
  • Working knowledge of Washington State Special Education Rules and Regulations (WAC 392‑172).
  • Evidence of previous positive recommendations and/or employment.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with staff, students, and parents as evidenced in evaluations and telephone references of co‑workers.
  • A cooperative and sensitive attitude in working with students, parents, and school personnel.
  • Familiarity with outside public and private medical, mental health, and social service resources.
  • Experience in a variety of program models including pull‑out and inclusionary programs.
  • Punctual and consistent attendance.
Job Description
  • Perform Functional Vision and Learning Media Assessments on new referrals and three‑year reevaluations.
  • Locate, identify, and interpret eye‑medical reports as they relate to educational environments.
  • Contribute to the appropriate specialized evaluations as needed, such as low vision, orientation and mobility, psychological, and adaptive PE.
  • Consult with diagnosticians, classroom teachers, students, and parents concerning appropriate evaluations, modifications, and test administration.
  • Teach Braille reading and writing, abacus skills, Braille Note, JAWS, and other compensatory skills as needed.
  • Teach orientation and mobility lessons.
  • Provide Braille, recorded, or enlarged materials as appropriate for each child.
  • Prepare Braille materials using Duxbury Braille Translation program, braille embosser, brailler.
  • Obtain modified testing materials (WASL, SAT, ACT, etc.) and assist in the administration; prepare modified versions of the MAP test, either in large print or Braille.
  • Provide information on how to order and set up all necessary equipment and materials in the students’ classroom for the VI student to learn (Brailler, low vision devices, computers, etc.). Assist in ensuring necessary room modifications and lighting changes.
  • Provide the classroom teacher with information regarding the unique needs of the VI child in their classroom.
  • Consult with the classroom teacher regarding methodology and strategies in teaching a VI student.
  • Assist in modifying materials and provide them to the classroom teacher. Teach support staff strategies for adapting materials.
  • Monitor the students’ progress in academic subjects and provide instruction in compensatory skills as needed in the areas the student may have difficulty with as a result of his visual impairment.
  • Discuss issues concerning the VI student with other Multidisciplinary (MDT) staff members.
  • Provide assistance to the students with visual impairments in understanding their attitudes and those of others concerning their visual impairment. Provide information to the student about their vision.
  • Participate in transition planning.
  • Work as liaison with other agencies in vocational assessment process.
