Job Overview

The person in this position will work directly with students in Southridge High School classrooms and other school settings. The para educator is responsible for carrying through prescribed instructional programs under the direction of certificated staff. Other duties include adapting materials to instructional needs, participating in recess, lunch, and crosswalk duty, and performing tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in classrooms under teacher direction, using developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Prepare instructional materials as requested.
  • Supervise playground, lunchroom, and crosswalk duties with appropriate safety measures.
  • Lead organized activities and games during recess and playtime.
  • Assist with first aid as needed.
  • Maintain records as directed.
  • Supervise and control students to promote a safe, orderly, and positive learning climate.
  • Maintain professional and confidential relationships with students and families.
  • Communicate with the supervisor and staff regarding work or student-related issues.
  • Perform all duties within Kennewick School District policies and procedures, including attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform any other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications Required
  • Successful experience working with elementary‑aged children.
  • Demonstrated experience using computers and technology applications including Windows software.
  • Evidence of flexibility and adaptability.
  • Strong academic background in reading, writing, and math.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise children during lunch and on the playground, developing appropriate games and activities.
  • Positive evaluations and recommendations.
  • Excellent attendance, punctuality, and dependability.
  • Self‑disciplined, self‑starter.
  • Ability to work with all children regardless of abilities and cultural background.
  • Adherence to board policies and administrative procedures.
  • Precautionary measures to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Attendance at in‑service trainings or other meetings as required.
  • Ability to assess and correct safety issues.
  • Maintaining tactful, cooperative, and effective relationships with students, parents, staff, and management.
  • Professional approach toward teamwork and continuous improvement.
  • Command of the English language for verbal and written communication.
  • Basic computer skills for record maintenance, time‑card entry, and email.
Qualifications Preferred
  • Experience working with home‑schooled students.
Conditions of Employment
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • AA degree or 72 quarter college credits or 48 semester credits or a passing score on the ETS test.
  • Attach unofficial transcript proving AA degree or equivalent to application; official transcripts required within 30 days of hire.
  • Pass a basic skills test.
  • First Aid/CPR certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Completion of Safe Schools Web‑Based Training within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.
  • Pass background check, including employee‑paid fingerprinting.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Mobility: Stand and walk for prolonged periods, push or pull 18–26 lbs., sit, kneel, crouch, twist, bend, use hands and fingers, reach with arms.
  • Sense: Talk/hear conversations, use telephone; taste, smell; vision for close, far, color, peripheral, depth, focus.
  • Lifting: Move up to 18–26 lbs.; lift overhead; move quickly in emergencies.
  • Work Environment: Outdoor work varying temperatures from
    -10°F to 100°F+; wet/humid conditions; moderate noise.
