Qualifications

Required:
  • Valid Washington State teacher’s certificate with endorsements in Health/Physical Education
  • Satisfactory evaluations
Qualifications Preferred:
  • Successful experience teaching elementary PE documented by positive evaluations
  • Basic understanding of the Washington State Physical Education EALRS
  • Understanding of and willingness to administer the PE CBPAs
  • Experience with and/or training with and willingness to include special‑needs children in the regular education PE classes
  • Experience working successfully with at‑risk students
  • Experience and knowledge of the 5 For Life PE curriculum
  • Ability and willingness to share the gym and its contents with other staff members
  • Ability and willingness to share responsibility for planning and coordinating PE curriculum so instruction will be sequential and developmentally appropriate for each grade level
  • Ability and willingness to use technology to enhance PE instruction
  • Ability and willingness to work as a team with other staff members to best meet the educational needs of the students
  • Ability and willingness to help set up equipment for music and non‑musical programs and assemblies
  • Training in elementary curriculum and instructional pedagogy and/or willingness to attend workshops
  • Evidence of successful classroom management
  • Evidence of successful communication with staff, students, and parents
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a PLC at the building and district level
  • Punctual and consistent attendance
Job Description
  • Collaboratively develop and teach K‑5 PE curriculum that integrates state PE EALRS, supports classroom curriculum, and emphasizes reading
  • Teach PE skills to classes of special‑needs students
  • Teach regular grade‑level classes which include special‑needs students
  • Manage and instruct students in proper use and care of equipment and safety precautions
  • Organize and lead physical activities such as field day, track and field day, and jog‑a‑thon for the school
  • Establish and maintain standards of student/classroom behavior to provide a supportive and productive learning environment
  • Demonstrate classroom management skills that allow for a safe and productive learning environment
  • Collaboratively prepare and support grade‑level and school programs and events
  • Collaboratively support students for any district or community‑wide PE and fitness events
  • Work with staff in supporting and enhancing classroom activities
  • Work cooperatively with other staff to maintain a positive, disciplined, educationally sound learning environment for students
  • Communicate with parents and staff through conferences and other means to discuss student behavior, progress, etc.
  • Provide support reading instruction up to one hour per day, if needed
  • Attend and participate actively in building staff and district elementary PE teacher meetings
  • Other duties as assigned
Physical Demands
  • Stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, push or pull 50 lbs., sit, kneel, crouch, twist, bend, use hands to type and manipulate equipment, and reach with hands and arms
  • Talk and hear conversations and other sounds; communicate effectively in person and over the telephone; taste and smell; vision requirements include close, far, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Lift or move up to 25 lbs. regularly and occasionally up to 100 lbs.; lift overhead; move quickly in emergencies or when supervising students
  • Work outdoors in temperatures ranging from
    -10°F to 100°F+; may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; noise level moderate
