Location: Hawthorne Elementary School
Hours: 6.5 Hours per Day, 180 Days per Year

Salary: $22.61 - $26.02 per Collective Bargaining Agreement

Earn up to $.60/hour extra, based on the number of college-level credits earned.

This position is based on student/program need. Hours may increase or decrease as necessary.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position involves working with and supervising students with special needs, primarily those with significant physical disabilities, in the life skills classroom and other school settings. The para educator works as part of a team with the special education teacher, other para educators, and specialists. Duties include educational instruction, diapering, feeding or tube feeding, lifting and positioning students, administering medication, catheterizing students (with training), and maintaining documentation to monitor student progress.

The para educator performs all duties within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures. Additional job‑related duties are assigned as needed.

Successful performance requires the ability to carry out each essential duty satisfactorily. The following represents the required knowledge, skill, and ability.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have an AA degree OR 72 quarter college credits OR 48 semester college credits OR a passing score on the ETS test.
  • Must attach unofficial transcript proving AA degree or equivalent to application.
  • Official transcripts of all levels of education, including high school, required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Must pass a basic skills test.
  • Completion of Safe Schools Web‑Based Training within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.
  • Must pass a background check, including employee‑paid fingerprinting.
  • CPI training must be obtained at the next available opportunity.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
  • Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Attend in‑service trainings and other meetings as required, and any training directed by management.
  • Assess and correct safety issues.
  • Establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative, effective relationship with students, parents, staff, colleagues and management.
  • Approach assigned work professionally, working toward teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate sufficient command of English to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff and others concerning all job activities.
  • Use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information and read/respond to email.
  • Be first‑aid certified or willing to acquire first‑aid training as soon as possible.
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED
  • Ability and willingness to safely supervise students during transition periods.
  • Training and experience in a life skills classroom.
  • Recognize, manage and implement behavior intervention strategies when appropriate.
  • Maintain documentation of ongoing student behavioral data and report to the IEP team.
  • Rapidly respond to students with elopement issues, visually tracking individual movement.
  • Feed and diaper children who require assistance in the bathroom setting.
  • Carry out prescribed instructional and behavioral management programs.
  • Model appropriate behaviors and provide consistent behavior intervention procedures.
  • Physically lift students as needed (50 lbs.) or up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
  • Use Microsoft Office software.
  • Demonstrate patience and warmth, staying calm in crisis.
  • Be flexible, self‑directed and work independently.
  • Work successfully in team situations.
  • Previous experience with moderate to severe disabilities.
  • Supervise and interact with students in P.E. and recess situations.
