Location: Amistad Elementary School, Kennewick, Washington
Hours: 6 Hours per Day, 180 Days per Year
Salary: $20.86 – $24.27 per hour
Earn up to $0.60 per hour extra based on college-level credits earned.
Job SummaryThe para educator will work with students individually and in groups in regular classroom and special services settings, under the supervision of certificated staff. The para educator will provide clerical assistance, crosswalk and recess supervision, and perform other job-related duties as needed.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct support to special education students in need of remediation accommodations in regular education and special services classrooms.
- Assist teachers with needed clerical or instructional tasks.
- Assist in supervision and control of students to promote a safe, orderly positive learning climate.
- Complete required paperwork with accuracy and efficiency to maintain compliance with state and school district regulations.
- Perform outside/recess supervision as assigned.
- Perform all duties within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an AA degree or 72 quarter college credits or 48 semester college credits or a passing score on the ETS test.
- Must attach unofficial transcript proving AA degree or equivalent to application; official transcripts required within 30 days of hire.
- Must be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must meet the physical demands of the position.
- Must pass a basic skills test.
- Completion of Safe Schools Web-Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
- Must pass a background check, which includes employee-paid fingerprinting.
- Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
- Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Attend in-service trainings and other meetings as required.
- Show ability to assess and correct safety issues.
- Maintain a tactful, cooperative relationship with students, parents, staff, and management.
- Approach work professionally toward teamwork, pride in service, and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrate sufficient command of English for verbal and written communication.
- Use basic computer programs for records, timecard entry, and email.
- Hold first-aid certification if required.
- Have a strong academic background in reading, writing, and math appropriate to grade level.
- Experience supporting special education students in regular education programs.
- Experience as a special education para educator or similar roles.
- Experience working with disabled children.
- Initiate tasks with minimal supervision.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Work with students who have learning disabilities and behavior challenges.
- Create a warm positive learning environment.
- Work well in a team.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
- Collaborate closely with teacher supervisors.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other technology applications.
- Positive recommendations and performance evaluations.
- Excellent attendance, punctuality, dependability; self-disciplined and self-starting.
Mobility: Stand and walk for prolonged periods, push/pull up to 50 lbs., sit, kneel, crouch, twist, bend, use hands, reach; may need quick movements in emergencies.
Sense: Talk/hear conversations, communicate effectively, taste and smell, vision requirements (near, far, color, peripheral, depth, focus).
Lifting: Lift up to 50 lbs. or 100 lbs. with help; lift overhead.
Work Environment: Outdoor conditions ranging from –10°F to 100°F+, possible wet/humid conditions; moderate noise.
