Position #23287: Para/SS/Life Skills Classroom
Location: Amistad Elementary School
Hours: 6.5 Hours per Day, 180 Days per Year
Salary: $22.61 - $26.02 per Collective Bargaining Agreement
Earn up to $0.60/hour extra based on the number of college-level credits earned.
Open Date: 06/17/2026 – Final date to receive applications: 06/25/2026 at 10:00 PM. This position is based on student/program need. Hours may increase or decrease as necessary.
Responsibilities- Carry out educational instruction, diapering, feeding or tube feeding, lifting and positioning students.
- Administer medication and catheterize students with appropriate training.
- Maintain documentation to monitor student progress.
- Provide direct support to life‑skills students under the supervision of classroom teachers.
- Follow teacher directives, collect data, enforce classroom rules, and set up classroom as instructed.
- Assist with clerical or instructional tasks such as making copies of worksheets, flashcards, and creating specialized materials.
- Supervise and control students to promote a safe, orderly, positive learning climate; supervise recess and assist specialists as needed.
- Ensure compliance with district policies, punctuality and attendance; perform other duties as assigned.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an AA degree OR 72 quarter college credits OR 48 semester college credits OR a passing score on the ETS test.
- Must attach unofficial transcript proving AA degree or equivalent to application; official transcripts required within 30 days of hire.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position.
- Must pass a basic skills test.
- Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
- Must pass a background check, including employee‑paid fingerprinting.
- CPI training must be obtained at the next available opportunity.
- Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
- Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Attend in‑service trainings or other meetings as required, and attend any training directed by management.
- Demonstrate ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
- Establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff and management.
- Approach assigned work professionally, working toward teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrate sufficient command of the English language for verbal and written communication with students, parents, district staff and others.
- Use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information and read/respond to email.
- Be first‑aid certified or be willing to acquire first aid training promptly.
- Ability and willingness to safely supervise students’ transition periods.
- Training and experience in a life‑skills classroom.
- Ability to recognize, manage and implement behavior intervention strategies when appropriate.
- Ability to maintain documentation of ongoing student behavioral data and report to the IEP team.
- Ability to run quickly after students with elopement issues and visually track student movement.
- Able to feed and diaper children who require assistance in the bathroom setting.
- Able to carry out prescribed instructional and behavioral management programs.
- Model appropriate behaviors and provide consistent behavior intervention procedures with students.
- Physically able to lift students up to 50 lbs. or up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office software.
- Patience and warmth in working with students; able to remain calm in crisis.
- Flexible and able to work independently.
- Effective teamwork skills; able to work successfully in team situations.
- Previous experience and training with students with moderate to severe disabilities.
- Superior communication with parents and staff as directed by supervisor.
- Cope with unpredictability, remain flexible, diplomatic and cooperative.
