Job Description
Starting Date: Immediately
Location: Amistad Elementary School
Hours: 6.5 Hours per Day, 180 Days per Year
Salary: $22.61 - $26.02 per collective bargaining agreement (plus up to $0.60 an hour extra based on college-level credits)
Job Summary: This position involves supporting and supervising students with significant physical disabilities in a life skills classroom and additional school settings. The para educator works as a team with the special‑education teacher, other para educators, and specialists. Duties include educational instruction, diapering, feeding or tube feeding, lifting and positioning the student, administering medication and/or catheterizing students with training, and maintaining documentation to monitor student progress.
Hours may increase or decrease based on student/program need.
Conditions of Employment- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an AA degree, or 72 quarter college credits, or 48 semester college credits, or a passing score on the ETS test.
- Must attach unofficial transcript proving AA degree or equivalent to application; official transcripts required within 30 days of hire.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must meet the physical demands of the position.
- Must pass a basic skills test.
- Completion of Safe Schools web‑based training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
- Must pass a background check, which includes employee‑paid fingerprinting.
- CPI training must be obtained at the next available opportunity.
- Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Attend in‑service trainings, meetings and other training as required.
- Assess and correct issues involving safety.
- Establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff and management.
- Approach assigned work professionally, working toward teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrate sufficient command of the English language for verbal and written communication.
- Use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter time‑card information and read and respond to email.
- Be first‑aid certified or willing to obtain first‑aid training soon.
- Ability and willingness to supervise students’ transition periods safely.
- Training and experience in a life‑skills classroom.
- Recognize and implement behavior intervention strategies.
- Maintain documentation of behavioral data and report to the IEP team.
- Track students quickly after elopement issues.
- Feed and diaper children who require assistance in the bathroom.
- Carry out prescribed instructional and behavioral management programs.
- Model appropriate behaviors and provide consistent behavior intervention procedures.
- Be physically able to lift students up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
- Possess skills with Microsoft Office software.
- Show patience and warmth, remain calm in crisis.
- Be flexible, take direction and work independently.
- Work successfully in team situations.
- Have experience training and working with students with moderate to severe disabilities.
- Supervise and interact with students in P.E. and recess.
- Willing to work in a team setting.
- Have positive evaluations and recommendations.
- Demonstrate excellent attendance, punctuality and dependability.
- Show patience, enthusiasm and a positive attitude toward students with disabling conditions.
- Communicate effectively with parents and staff.
- Cope with unpredictability, remain flexible, diplomatic and maintain confidentiality.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide direct support to life‑skills students under the supervision of classroom teachers using prescribed formats.
- Follow teacher directions; implement data collection, classroom rules, set‑up, and specific student directives.
- Collect accurate data on correct forms; complete required paperwork efficiently to maintain compliance with regulations.
