6 Hours per Day, 180 Days per Year

Salary: $22.61 – $26.02 per hour. Earn up to $0.60 extra per hour based on college-level credits earned.

Job Description

This position involves working with and supervising students with Autism who have significant special needs in general and special education settings. The para educator works as part of a team with the special education teacher, other para educators, and specialists, carrying out educational instruction and training provided by the school district. The role also includes maintaining documentation to monitor student progress and performing all duties consistent with Kennewick School District policies and procedures.

Other responsibilities are assigned as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct support to special education students in the Tier II Autism program.
  • Assist teachers with clerical and instructional tasks.
  • Support students with physical and health needs as required.
  • Assist in data collection and record keeping.
  • Implement prescribed behavioral intervention strategies.
  • Supervise and maintain control of students to promote a safe and orderly learning climate.
  • Complete required paperwork accurately and efficiently to maintain compliance with state and district regulations.
  • Assist specialists (P.E., Music, Library) in supervising special education students as needed.
  • Supervise students during recess times within the school day.
  • Adhere to all district policies, including regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have an AA degree, 72 quarter college credits, 48 semester credits, or a passing ETS test score.
  • Must attach an unofficial transcript proving AA degree or equivalent to the application. Official transcripts are required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Must pass a basic skills test.
  • Complete Safe Schools Web‑Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
  • Must pass a background check that includes employee‑paid fingerprinting.
  • Obtain CPI training at the next available opportunity;
    Level I and II required.
Qualifications Required
  • Uphold board policies and administrative procedures.
  • Protect students, equipment, and facilities through appropriate precautions.
  • Attend required and directed trainings and meetings.
  • Assess and correct safety issues.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with students, parents, staff, and management.
  • Demonstrate professional, teamwork‑oriented work ethic.
  • Communicate effectively in written and verbal English with all stakeholders.
  • Use basic computer programs for records, timecard entry, and email.
  • Be first‑aid certified or willing to obtain certification promptly.
  • Physically able and willing to supervise Tier II Autism students and general education students during recess, PE, and music classes.
Qualifications Preferred
  • Proficiency in word processing and computer use.
  • Experience working with students with Autism.
  • Knowledge of prescribed instructional and behavioral management programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intervention procedures and data collection.
  • Model appropriate behaviors and provide consistent interventions.
  • Patience, warmth, and calmness in crisis situations.
  • Awareness of multiple students and quick, judicious responses.
  • Maintain documentation of IEP goals and objectives.
  • Physically able to hold or restrain students using CPI techniques.
  • Positive performance evaluations and recommendations.
  • Excellent attendance, punctuality, and dependability; self‑disciplined and a self‑starter.
  • Experience in team‑teaching situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to cope with unpredictability, remain flexible, stay committed, maintain composure, and communicate effectively.
