Location: Kamiakin High School
Hours: 6.5 Hours per Day, 180 Days per Year
Salary: $20.86 – $24.27 per hour (plus up to $0.60/hr for college credits)
The para educator will provide reading instruction to students in a small‑group intervention room and classroom, carrying through prescribed instructional programs under the direction of certificated staff using a specific reading intervention curriculum. Additional duties include adapting materials for instructional needs, maintaining accurate records, administering and scoring reading assessments, recess supervision, lunchroom supervision, and other para educator duties as assigned.
Responsibilities- Assist the nurse with student health needs, including catheterization and tube feeding.
- Support students with educational needs in the regular classroom and small groups.
- Deliver reading instruction as directed by certificated staff.
- Prepare instructional materials and administer reading assessments.
- Participate in staff and program in‑services.
- Maintain records and other required documentation.
- Collaborate with parents, staff, and students to support learning.
- Provide clerical assistance when needed.
- Supervise students to ensure a safe, orderly, positive learning environment.
- Perform all duties in accordance with Kennewick School District policies and procedures.
- Complete other job‑related duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Associate’s degree, or 72 quarter / 48 semester college credits, or a passing ETS test score.
- Official transcripts of all education levels within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Physical fitness to meet job demands.
- Pass a basic skills test.
- Complete Safe Schools Web‑based training within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.
- Pass a background check, including employee‑paid fingerprinting.
- Assist with catheterization and tube feeding of students.
- Academic knowledge in science, language arts, math, reading, and social studies.
- Uphold board policies and administrative procedures.
- Take precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
- Attend required training and meetings.
- Assess and address safety issues.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and management.
- Communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing.
- Use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecards, and respond to email.
- Be willing to obtain first‑aid certification if required.
- Recent experience working at the elementary school level with students who have academic and special needs.
- Ability to relate effectively with children.
- Diplomatic, flexible, and cooperative in unpredictable settings.
- Patience, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude toward working with elementary students.
- Adequate handling of confidential student information.
- Independent work ethic and task completion.
- Computer and equipment proficiency.
- Strong interpersonal skills for small instructional groups, one‑on‑one, and assessment environments.
- Team‑oriented and adaptable to guided instruction.
- Willingness to attend district training, protocols, and procedures.
- Positive evaluations and recommendations supporting character and work ethic.
- Excellent attendance, punctuality, and dependability.
- Employment is contingent on passing a basic skills test and background check.
- Safe Schools training and Safe Schools web training are required.
- Transcripts and documentation must be submitted within specified time frames.
Job requires prolonged standing, walking, and the ability to lift and push or pull up to 50 pounds. Employees must also be able to perform tasks such as typing, reaching, and handling equipment. Adequate vision, hearing, taste, and smell are required. Work may involve outdoor conditions with temperatures ranging from
-10°F to 100°F+ and moderate noise.
