Para/SS/Tier II Structured Learning – Edison
Starting Date: Immediately
Location: Edison Elementary, Kennewick, WA
Hours: 6.5 hours per day, 180 days per year
Salary: $22.61 – $26.02 per hour, plus up to $0.60 per hour for college credits.
Job DescriptionThis position involves working with and supervising students who have special needs, including disabled students with behavioral needs. The para educator will collaborate with the special education teacher, other para educators, and specialists to provide educational instruction and training, maintain documentation of student progress, and perform all duties within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures.
Responsibilities- Provide direct support to special education students in the Tier II Behavior program.
- Provide support for the physical/health needs of students as required.
- Assist teachers with clerical or instructional tasks.
- Assist with data collection.
- Implement prescribed strategies for behavioral interventions.
- Assist in the supervision and control of students to promote a safe, orderly, positive learning climate.
- Complete required paperwork with accuracy and efficiency to maintain compliance with state and district regulations.
- Assist specialists (P.E., Music, Library) in supervising special education students as required.
- Make parent contacts and attend student update meetings.
- Supervise students during recess and other school periods.
- Perform all duties within the scope of district policies, including regular attendance and punctuality.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
- Must take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Must attend required in‑service trainings or other meetings.
- Evidence of ability to assess and correct safety issues.
- Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative, and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, and management.
- Evidence of professional approach, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Proficient communication in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Basic computer proficiency for record keeping and email.
- First‑aid certification or willingness to obtain training promptly.
- Physical ability to supervise Development Therapy and general‑education students during recess and PE/music classes.
- Proficiency in word processing and computer use.
- Experience with behaviorally disabled students, early childhood, and elementary children.
- Knowledge of prescribed instructional and behavioral management programs.
- Knowledge of intervention procedures.
- Ability to model appropriate behaviors and provide consistent interventions.
- Patience and warmth when working with students, remaining calm in crisis.
- Ability to oversee multiple students and respond quickly and judgmentally.
- Maintain documentation of IEP goals and objectives.
- Physically able to lift or restrain elementary‑aged students as needed.
- Positive performance evaluations and recommendations.
- Excellent attendance, punctuality, and self‑discipline.
- Experience in team‑teaching situations.
- The candidate must demonstrate the ability to:
- a. Cope with unpredictability
- b. Be flexible, diplomatic, and cooperative with varied demands
- c. Demonstrate patience, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude toward students with behavior disorders and other disabling conditions
- d. Maintain composure in difficult situations
- e. Communicate effectively and work with a variety of people
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an AA degree, 72 quarter college credits, 48 semester college credits, or a passing ETS score.
- Must attach an unofficial transcript proving an AA degree or equivalent to the application. Official transcripts of all education levels are required within 30 days of hire.
- Must be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must meet the physical demands of the position.
- Must pass a basic skills test.
