Location: Highlands Middle School

Our goals for the dual language program are to develop high levels of proficiency in Spanish and English in all students, to help them attain the WA state Seal of Biliteracy, achieve grade‑level academic standards in English and Spanish, and develop sociocultural competence.

Required Qualifications
  • Valid Washington State teacher’s certificate with endorsement in K‑8
  • Bilingual/Biliterate in Spanish (must pass STAMP)
  • Satisfactory evaluations
Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of motivating and instructing students of all ability levels with emphasis on providing for their individual learning styles documented by evaluations or references from former colleagues and supervisors.
  • Evidence of maintaining a positive, productive learning climate with students, families, and colleagues documented by evaluations or references.
  • Evidence of recent successful middle school teaching experience with culturally diverse children documented by evaluations or references.
  • Evidence of recent (within last 5 years) coursework in reading/language arts and social studies.
  • Evidence of successful communication with school staff, parents, and students.
  • Training and/or experience in the use of GLAD.
  • Training and/or experience in the use of biliteracy strategies.
  • Training and experience (or willingness to attend training) in biliteracy teaching (English/Spanish).
  • The ability to work within PLC teams.
  • Training and/or experience in utilizing technology as instructional tool.
  • Training and/or experience in administering various types of assessment and using the data to guide instruction.
  • Punctual and consistent attendance.
Responsibilities
  • Work specifically to prepare students for building, district, and state assessments.
  • Provide an effective program of instruction in accordance with the school’s language and content allocation, grade‑level standards, and instructional materials.
  • Be a “team player” by establishing and maintaining cooperative professional relationships with others.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules and administrative regulations.
  • Attend and participate in faculty in‑service, trainings, and various committee meetings.
  • Explore and implement curriculum and teaching strategies as identified through building/grade‑level adoption process.
  • Value a multicultural school population; work well with students and parents of different cultures.
  • Support district and building goals by participating in planning, training, implementing, and evaluating effectiveness of programs and teaching methodologies.
  • Assess students as directed by the district and school assessment plans.
  • Provide specific reading remediation as determined by assessment tools.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining good classroom management.
  • Work collaboratively with para educators and other teachers to devise appropriate instruction for all students.
  • Use student achievement data to guide instructional decisions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands

Stand, walk, and move for prolonged periods; lift and pull 18‑26 lbs.; sit, kneel, crossover; use hands, reach, communicate orally and in writing; maintain adequate vision. Work outdoors in temperatures ranging from
-10 °F to 100 °F and in varying weather conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
