Para/SS/Resource Room – Amistad Elementary School

Location: Amistad Elementary School, Kennewick, Washington

Hours: 6 Hours per Day, 180 Days per Year

Salary: $20.86 – $24.27 per hour

Starting Date: Immediately

Job Description

The para educator will work with students individually and in groups in the regular classroom and special services settings, under the supervision of certificated staff. Responsibilities include providing clerical assistance, cross‑walk and recess supervision, and performing other job‑related duties as needed. The position may increase or decrease in hours based on student/program need.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have an AA degree or 72 quarter college credits, or 48 semester college credits, or pass the ETS test.
  • Must attach an unofficial transcript proving AA degree or equivalent to the application; official transcripts required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Must pass a basic skills test.
  • Complete Safe Schools Web‑Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
  • Must pass a background check, including employee‑paid fingerprinting.
Qualifications – Required
  • Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Attend all required trainings and meetings.
  • Demonstrate ability to assess and correct safety issues.
  • Maintain a tactful, cooperative relationship with students, parents, staff, and management.
  • Approach work professionally, promoting teamwork, pride in service delivery, and continuous improvement.
  • Sufficient command of the English language for verbal and written communication with students, parents, district staff, and others.
  • Use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information, and respond to email.
  • First‑aid certified if required.
  • Strong academic background in reading, writing, and math; may be tested to meet minimum qualifications.
Qualifications – Preferred
  • Previous experience supporting special education students in regular education programs.
  • Experience as a special education para educator or similar role.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities.
  • Initiative and capacity to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Experience working with students who have learning disabilities and behavior challenges.
  • Create a warm, positive learning environment by encouraging students.
  • Flexibility and teamwork skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Cooperate closely with teacher supervisors.
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and other technology applications.
  • Positive recommendations and performance evaluations.
  • Excellent attendance, punctuality, and dependability; self‑disciplined and self‑starter.
Job Responsibilities
  • Provide direct support to special education students who require remediation accommodations in regular and special services classrooms.
  • Assist teachers with clerical or instructional tasks.
  • Assist with supervision and control of students to promote a safe, orderly, positive learning climate.
  • Complete required paperwork accurately and efficiently to maintain compliance with state and district regulations.
  • Perform outside and recess supervision as assigned.
  • Perform all duties within the scope of Kennewick School District policies, including regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Mobility: Stand and walk for prolonged periods, push or pull up to 50 lbs., sit, kneel, crouch, twist, bend, type, and reach with hands and arms. May need to move quickly in emergencies or while supervising students.
  • Sense: Talk and hear conversations, communicate effectively in person and over the telephone, and have taste and smell. Vision requirements include close, far, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Lifting: Lift or move up to 50 lbs., up to 100 lbs. with help, and lift overhead.
  • Work Environment: Work outdoors in temperatures ranging from
    -10°F to 100°F+. Exposed to wet or humid conditions. Noise level is moderate.
