Salary: $20.86 - $24.27 per hour

Job DescriptionThe para educator in this position will give reading instruction to students in a small group intervention room and classroom. They will be responsible for carrying through prescribed instructional programs under the direct supervision and training of certificated staff using specific reading intervention curriculum. Other duties include adapting and making materials appropriate to instructional needs, maintaining accurate records, administering and scoring reading assessments, recess supervision, lunchroom supervision, and performing other para educator duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Responsibilities- Assist nurse with health needs of student, including catheterization and tube feeding.
- Assist students with educational needs, including assistance in the regular classroom in reading and other areas as required.
- Instruct students as directed by certificated staff.
- Prepare instructional materials as requested.
- Participate in staff and program in‑services.
- Maintain records as necessary.
- Carry out plans and activities for students as designed by the reading specialist and classroom teacher.
- Work cooperatively with parents, staff and students.
- Provide clerical assistance as needed.
- Supervise students to provide a safe, orderly, positive learning environment.
- Perform all duties within Kennewick School District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- AA degree or 72 quarter college credits or 48 semester college credits or passing score on ETS test.
- Attach unofficial transcript proving AA or equivalent.
- Official transcripts of all levels of education, including high school, required within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
- Pass a basic skills test.
- Completion of Safe Schools Web‑Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
- Pass a background check, including employee‑paid fingerprinting.
- Assist with catheterization and tube feeding of student.
- Required academic skills to assist students (knowledge in sciences, language arts, math, reading, and social studies).
- Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
- Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Attend in‑service trainings or other meetings as required.
- Assess and correct safety issues.
- Establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative, effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees and management.
- Approach assigned work professionally, teamwork, pride in service delivery, continuous improvement.
- Command of English language to communicate verbally and in writing.
- Use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information and read/respond to email.
- Willingness to become first‑aid certified if required.
- Recent experience working at the elementary school level with students with academic and special needs.
- Ability to relate effectively with children.
- Cope with unpredictability; be flexible, diplomatic and cooperative.
- Demonstrate patience, enthusiasm and positive attitude toward working with elementary education students.
- Value the confidential nature of sensitive student information.
- Able to work independently and carry out assigned tasks.
- Able to operate computer and other equipment as necessary.
- Communicate and develop relationships with students, teachers, administrators, parents and community.
- Strong interpersonal skills for small instructional student groups, one‑on‑one, and assessment environment.
