Hours: 6 Hours per Day, 180 Days per Year
Salary: $21.40 - $24.90 per hour (plus up to $0.60 per hour extra based on college-level credits)
Job DescriptionThe para educator will work directly with students in a bilingual classroom setting and assist classroom teachers in assigned tasks. The para educator will carry out prescribed instructional programs under direct supervision of certificated staff. Other duties include adapting materials, recess supervision, maintaining accurate records, and performing other duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment- Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an AA degree or 72 quarter college credits or 48 semester credits or a passing score on the ETS test.
- Must attach unofficial transcript proving AA or equivalent to application. Official transcripts required within 30 days of hire.
- Spanish bilingual skills required – must pass the STAMP bilingual assessment within two weeks of job offer.
- Must be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must meet the physical demands of the position.
- Must pass a basic skills test.
- Complete Safe Schools Web-Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
- Must pass a background check, which includes employee‑paid fingerprinting.
- Academic skills to assist students (sciences, language arts, math, reading, social studies).
- Uphold board policies and administrative procedures.
- Takes precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Attends all‑required in‑service trainings and meetings.
- Can assess and correct safety issues.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with students, parents, staff, and management.
- Approaches work professionally toward teamwork and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrates sufficient command of English for verbal and written communication.
- Uses basic computer programs to maintain records, input timecards, read and respond to email.
- Willing to become first‑aid certified if required.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Recent experience working with students of diverse ethnic backgrounds.
- Ability to relate effectively in a bilingual/bicultural setting.
- Proficient in supplemental reading instruction.
- Knowledge of second language acquisition and ESL strategies.
- Follows directions from supervising teacher.
- Models appropriate behaviors and intervention procedures.
- Works effectively in a team setting.
- Operates office equipment including keyboarding and data processing.
- Communicates and develops relationships with students, teachers, administrators, parents, and public.
- Manages interruptions while balancing daily responsibilities.
- Monitors student progress under teacher supervision.
- Self‑starter with excellent attendance, punctuality, and dependability.
- Assist with instruction using developmentally appropriate activities.
- Carry out teacher‑designed plans and activities.
- Work cooperatively with parents, staff, and students.
- Participate in assessment activities.
- Prepare instructional materials as requested.
- Supervise playground and crosswalk duties.
- Attend in‑service training, meetings, and Parent Advisory Council meetings.
- Maintain records for efficient procedures and evaluation.
- Part of building team for planning and implementing activities.
- Perform crosswalk supervision duties.
- Keep professionalism; maintain confidentiality.
- Act as interpreter/translator for conferences and written communications.
- Assist with supervision and control of students for a safe, orderly, positive learning climate.
- Complete all tasks professionally, modeling appropriate adult behavior.
- Behave in a manner reflecting community standards of politeness, civility, and sensitivity.
- Perform all other duties assigned by supervisor.
- Meet Kennewick School District policies, including regular attendance and punctuality.
Physical Demands:
Stand and walk for prolonged periods, push/pull 18–26 lbs, sit, kneel, crouch, twist, bend, use hands to type and handle objects, reach with hands and arm. Lift up to 18–26 lbs, lift overhead, move quickly in emergencies. Speech, hearing, and basic vision required.
Work Environment:
Outdoor temperatures ranging from –10°F to 100°F, wet/humid conditions, moderate noise level.
