Location: Desert Hills Middle School, Kennewick, WA
Salary: $21.40 – $24.90 per hour (plus up to $0.60 per hour for college credits)
Hours: 6 hours per day, 180 days per year
Position SummaryThe para educator will provide reading instruction and general support to students with disabilities in a small‑group intervention room and classroom setting. Responsibilities include implementing prescribed instructional programs, adapting materials, maintaining records, supervising students during recess and lunch, and performing other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities- Assist students with educational needs, including reading and other areas as directed by certificated staff.
- Instruct students in reading and other subjects as instructed.
- Administer reading assessments.
- Prepare instructional materials.
- Participate in staff and program in‑services.
- Maintain student records.
- Collaborate with parents, staff, and students.
- Provide clerical assistance as needed.
- Supervise students to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
- Comply with Kennewick School District policies and procedures, including attendance and punctuality.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an AA degree, 72 quarter credits, 48 semester credits, or a passing ETS score.
- Must attach an unofficial transcript proving AA or equivalent; official transcripts required within 30 days of hire.
- Must be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must meet the physical demands of the position.
- Must pass a basic skills test.
- Must complete Safe Schools Web‑Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
- Must pass a background check, including employee‑paid fingerprinting.
- Ability to assist with catheterization and tube feeding.
- Academic skills in sciences, language arts, math, reading, and social studies.
- Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
- Take precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
- Attend required training and meetings.
- Assure safety by addressing related issues.
- Maintain a cooperative relationship with students, parents, staff, and management.
- Approach work professionally, contributing to teamwork and continuous improvement.
- Communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing.
- Use basic computer programs for records, timecard entry, and email.
- Willingly become first‑aid certified if required.
- Experience working at elementary level with students having academic and special needs.
- Effective communication with children.
- Adaptability, diplomacy, and teamwork.

Physical Demands: Regular standing, walking, pushing or pulling up to 18–26 lbs, sitting, kneeling, crouching, twisting, bending, typing, and reaching. Must lift up to 50 lbs and move quickly in emergencies.
Sense: Adequate hearing, speaking, tasting, smelling, and vision (near, far, color, peripheral, depth). Must communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
Work Environment: Work outdoors in temperatures ranging from
-10 °F to 100 °F. Exposure to wet/humid conditions possible. Moderate noise level.
