This position will play a key role in supporting the County’s financial operations and compliance. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Accountant to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with state and federal requirements. Responsibilities include assisting with preparation of annual financial statements and supporting audits.
A strong background in governmental accounting principles and practices is highly desirable, including experience with Washington State BARS (Budgeting, Accounting, and Reporting System) structure. The role involves applying GASB standards, fund accounting, and other public sector financial regulations. The ideal candidate will have excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across departments to maintain transparency and accountability in financial reporting.

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance or related field.
Minimum Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible governmental accounting experience with one year of supervisory or lead experience OR any combination of education and experience which would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.

POSITION SUMMARYThis position is responsible for performing budgetary and financial analyses in operations and productivity and recommending improvements in program efficiency and effectiveness within general County policies and goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe following duties are essential for this position.

- Assists in the preparation of the preliminary biennium budgets; assists in the development of revenue and expenditure budgets; monitors expenses and revenue changes to make necessary modifications.
- Reviews and analyzes budget and financial monthly/quarterly reports related to performance metrics and budget vs. actual status; provides subsequent recommendations or action plans and checks fund balance cash status.
- Prepares, assists in and/or provides oversight of financial work in areas of payroll processing, cash receipting, payment vouchering and annual operating transfers.
- Processes, analyzes and/or monitors billings to outside entities for Benton County services.
- Assists in preparation of financial reports and presentations and/or others as assigned.
- Researches special projects as assigned and prepares detailed financial analyses, e.g., financial impacts related to grant applications, contracts, facilities expansion projects, etc.
- May lead the work of other support staff; provides training, guidance and ongoing direction to oversee budgetary and financial activities.
- Enters, scans, updates, and maintains information in spreadsheets, databases, and reports.
- Maintains electronic filing, paper filing, and record systems to provide easy access to records and information; provides retention of records as required by Office and County policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Governmental accounting and auditing methods, procedures, and financial practices.
- The principles, theories and concepts of accounting including Governmental Accounting Board Standards (GASB) for all fund types.
- The County and Office’s operating requirements, policies, procedures, and practices; and local, State, and Federal regulations related to department programs and operations.
