Job Overview
The General Accounting Office (GAO) in the Office of the CFO (OCFO) is responsible for ensuring the integrity of Georgetown University’s financial records and systems. The GAO promotes efficient use of resources and compliance with laws, regulations, and reporting requirements. As a staff accountant reporting to the Director of Campus Accounting, you will review and process general ledger transactions for the assigned unit under tight deadlines and diverse accounting activities.
Responsibilities- Review and process general ledger transactions for the assigned unit
- Participate in month‑end close activities and special projects
- Generate financial reports and verify account activity and balances each month
- Reconcile assigned general ledger accounts on a monthly or quarterly basis and prepare adjusting journal entries when required
- Prepare support documentation for monthly closing entries
- Monitor unit‑based fund accounting and ensure compliance with the utilization of temporarily restricted (TR) funds
- Complete payroll accounting adjustments and deposit tickets for assigned unit(s) when requested
- Participate in user acceptance testing for Workday financial system updates
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, procurement analysts, and other departments to uphold internal control policies and guidelines
- Attend campus and university‑wide financial meetings, task forces, and working groups as assigned
- Provide customer service and support to assigned schools and administrative units
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
- 2–3 years of progressive experience in financial accounting and reporting
- Understanding of university cost‑center hierarchy, chart of accounts, and budgeted accounts for expense allocation
- Strong Excel and general data‑analysis skills (ability to identify errors, challenges, and process‑improvement opportunities)
- Ability to run and utilize financial‑system reports for management purposes
- Professional demeanor, excellent communication skills, and ability to provide exceptional customer service
- Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to triage and escalate complex issues
- Great attention to detail, teamwork orientation, and service‑oriented mindset
- Strong time‑management skills with the ability to prioritize work and multi‑task to meet deadlines
- Creativity and problem‑solving ability
- Experience in a complex higher‑education or not‑for‑profit organization is a plus
Hybrid – an employee may work at the campus or remotely, per the university’s current work‑mode designation. The designation may be reviewed and changed as the university’s needs evolve.
CompensationPay range: $47,586.00 – $87,558.13. Compensation is based on factors including qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications.
