Asphalt Screed Operator

Position Description

Under the direction of the paving foreman the asphalt screed operator is responsible for controlling material taken into the paver and the depths of the material placed by the paver. Manipulates hand controls to dictate the movements of the screed, which spreads and levels asphalt on subgrade. Performs normal maintenance such as oil, grease, service and makes normal operating adjustments to the equipment.

May perform other related duties, such as adding or removing screed extensions, installing or removing automatic devices or other accessories associated with the machine.

• Match all paver joints and maintain consistent joints.
• Keep screed adjusted properly and maintain mat quality.
• Assist in handwork as needed.
• Set up screed electronics in conjunction with Paver Operator.
• Assure proper storage and maintenance of all screed equipment.
• Job site clean‑up.

• Field Environment – Work is exposed to outdoor conditions, noise and heat.
• Ability to work long days and Saturdays as required.

• Reporting to work on time and not leaving early unless authorized.
• Always providing proper notification and advance notice of absence.
• Not abusing or taking advantage of personal days off.
• Performing such other duties as may be required.

• Self‑motivated.
• Ability to work well with subordinates, peers and supervisors.
• Ambitious.

Physical demands of the position include: sitting, standing, walking, climbing, low level work, reaching, bending, trunk movements, lifting a minimum of 45 lbs., carrying, pushing/pulling, dexterity of hands and fingers, seeing, hearing and talking.
