Asphalt Screed Operator

Position Description

Under the direction of the paving foreman, the asphalt screed operator is responsible for controlling material taken into the paver and the depths of the material placed by the paver. The operator manipulates hand controls to dictate the movements of the screed, which spreads and levels asphalt on subgrade. The operator performs normal maintenance such as oiling, greasing, servicing and makes normal operating adjustments to the equipment.

Other related duties may include adding or removing screed extensions, installing or removing automatic devices or other accessories associated with the machine.

• Match all paver joints and maintain consistent joints.
• Keep screed adjusted properly and maintain mat quality.
• Assist in handwork as needed.
• Set up screed electronics in conjunction with Paver Operator.
• Assure proper storage and maintenance of all screed equipment.
• Perform job site clean‑up.

• Field Environment – work is exposed to outdoor conditions, noise and heat.
• Ability to work long days and Saturdays as required.

• Report to work on time and not leave early unless authorized.
• Always provide proper notification and advance notice of absence.
• Do not abuse or take advantage of personal days off.
• Perform such other duties as may be required.

Physical demands of the position include sitting, standing, walking, climbing, low level work, reaching, bending, trunk movements, lifting minimum of 45 lbs., carrying, pushing/pulling, dexterity of hands and fingers, seeing, hearing and talking.
