General Overview of Position

Kenosha Transit is seeking bus drivers to work a part-time schedule driving middle and high school students on City shuttle buses during the public school year. Work is performed Monday through Friday. No work is scheduled during weekends, during the summer public school break, established school holidays or when students do not report (teacher workdays). Additional hours ("fill in work") at a higher pay rate may be available to part-time drivers during the school year and/or over established school breaks, but are not mandatory (unless required by Transit Management) nor are these hours guaranteed.

Applicants can select any of these schedule options:

Split Shift - Drivers are scheduled to work a split shift, Monday through Friday, for two (2) hours in the morning from 6:30am-8:30am and two (2) hours in the afternoon from 2:30pm-4:30pm (approximately 20 hours per week).

Mornings Only - Drivers are scheduled to work two (2) hours in the morning from 6:30am-8:30am (approximately 10 hours per week).

Afternoons Only - Drivers are scheduled to work two (2) hours in the afternoon from 2:30pm-4:30pm (approximately 10 hours per week).

This position is represented by Local 998 of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) and is covered by a fair share agreement. This recruitment is open to all qualified applicants and will establish an eligibility list which will be used to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill any other openings in this classification which occur in the next 12 months.

Please note that City employees (including seasonal employees) may only be employed in one classification at any one given time.

Duties & Responsibilities

* Drives City bus on predetermined schedule (Monday through Friday during the established public school year of September through June).

* Picks up and drops off riders from pre-determined locations.

* Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

* Must be 18 years of age or older.

* High school diploma, GED or HSED.

* Valid, regular, "Class D" driver's license.

What type of license do I need to drive a City bus?

* You need a valid Class B commercial driver license (CDL) - or an instructional permit (CDLI).

* Passenger ("P") endorsement - or a temporary permit.

* Air brake endorsement - or a temporary permit.

* The City does not pay for you to obtain a CDLI or CDL.

* If you permanently reside in another state and have a CDL from that state, you must possess interstate exemption status. This means your CDL allows you to drive across state lines.

* If you are a new Wisconsin resident and hold a valid CDL from another state, you must provide proof of license transfer upon hire. You cannot reside in one state and hold a CDL from another (or multiple) states.

* If you have a military license issued by a military facility that allowed you to operate a military commercial vehicle, you may be able to use this license to obtain a Wisconsin CDL.

What if I don't have my CDL?

* WE PROVIDE PAID, ON-THE-JOB TRAINING WITH CERTIFIED DOT INSTRUCTORS to an applicant who has a CDL instructional permit (CDLI) with temporary "P" and air brake endorsements.

* You will be disqualified from the application process if you do not have the CDL or permit (with the required endorsements or temporary permits) or are unable to obtain such prior to employment.

* You will need to reapply for the position once you hold the required licensing.

Training &

Experience:

* Previous work experience which involved driving duties or operating large vehicles is desired, but not required.

* Work experience dealing directly and successfully with the general public on a daily basis.

Essential

* Knowledge of the safe operation of a passenger carrying vehicle.

* Knowledge of the rules of the road applicable to large vehicles.

* Skill in the safe operation of large vehicles.

* Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

* Ability to communicate information tactfully and impartially.

* Ability to work well with others, including co-workers, superiors, and the general public.

* Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
