Packaging Engineer

The Packaging Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and costing packaging solutions that meet customer, production, and operational requirements. This role analyzes CAD drawings, specifications, materials, and manufacturing processes to develop accurate cost estimates and packaging designs that are functional, manufacturable, and cost-effective. The Packaging Engineer partners closely with Engineering, Operations, Sales, Purchasing, and Production to support new and existing packaging programs.

• Design and develop packaging solutions for products, components, and customer applications.
• Review drawings, specifications, and project documentation to determine material, labor, and production requirements.
• Prepare accurate cost estimates and quotations for packaging materials, production processes, and related services.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Production, Sales, and Purchasing teams to define packaging methods and associated costs.
• Develop packaging concepts, prototypes, specifications, and process documentation.
• Evaluate packaging materials, manufacturing methods, and supply chain considerations to optimize performance and cost.
• Create and modify CAD drawings, packaging layouts, and technical documentation using Solid Works or similar software.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and adapting to changing customer requirements.
• Work with vendors and suppliers to source materials, review pricing, and ensure packaging solutions meet quality and performance standards.
• Conduct testing and validation of packaging designs for durability, functionality, transportation, and compliance requirements.
• Analyze cost drivers and recommend opportunities for cost reduction and process improvement.
• Support production teams with packaging implementation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Conduct post-project reviews comparing estimated versus actual costs to improve future accuracy and profitability.
• Ensure packaging designs comply with customer specifications, industry standards, and applicable regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field; OR
• Associate degree in Engineering or related discipline with 2+ years of packaging, estimating, or manufacturing experience.
• Minimum of 2 years of related experience in packaging design, manufacturing, or estimating preferred.

• Strong understanding of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and cost estimating principles.
• Experience designing packaging solutions for manufacturing, distribution, or industrial applications.
• Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
• Experience with CAD software such as Solid Works or similar design platforms.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel; ERP experience preferred (Epicor a plus).
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical information clearly.
• Knowledge of packaging testing, transportation requirements, and material performance preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
