Basic FunctionTo provide financial management services and business support to one or more academic or administrative departments/units with moderate operating budgets; to support the unit(s) in making sound financial decisions. Reports to Dean, Chairperson, or designated administrator.
Additional Basic Function – if applicableBased in the Office of the Provost, this shared position supports collaborative work across University College, the College of Honors and Global Education, and the Office of the Provost.
Examples of DutiesDuties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Develop financial plans and reporting that aligns with the unit's strategies.
- Communicate and clarify the financial aspects of the unit’s strategic business plans within the unit and to appropriate areas outside the unit.
- Provide leadership in the development of long-range financial plans.
- Conduct business process analysis, needs assessments, and preliminary cost/benefit analysis on program proposals and alternatives being considered.
- Analyze costs and expenditure and prepare fiscal projections for use in determining budget. Assist budgetary authority with the preparation of the annual budget process and coordinate budgeting activity for assigned unit(s). Monitors budget throughout the year.
- Build modeling tools to support financial forecasting; perform financial analysis to help determine financial feasibility of new or revised programs/services. Coordinate the development of business plans for identified initiatives. Work in cooperation with other university departments and budgetary authorities to ensure that the financial analysis, informational needs of the unit(s) are met.
- Function as the contact through which all fiscal events occur. Ensure adherence to university policy, procedures and internal controls with regard to business and financial related matters.
- Oversee, monitor, and/or perform transactions involving business support functions (e.g. management of cash handling and controls, invoicing, purchasing, expense records management, payroll/H.R. record keeping and budgeting).
- Maintain, balance and reconcile all unit accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness. Analyze budgets, accounts, expenditures and transfers. Investigate issues and discrepancies and research solutions. Make recommendations based on findings and prepare responses.
- Compile and report financial information for management analysis and decision making needs. Utilize and maintain automated reporting systems. May develop databases, logs and spreadsheets to maintain records and create reports.
- May support faculty and researchers with preparation of grant budgets, contracts and related records; formulate and implement operating guidelines and procedures for business processes internal to assigned unit(s); assist assigned (s) with business operations not specifically related to financial matters; work on special projects; and supervise business operations support staff.
- Provide functional guidance of administrative/professional employees and/or direct supervision of support staff on an on-going basis. May provide ongoing facilitation of consecutive projects.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related business degree. Three years’ budget and accounting experience which includes experience in budget development and monitoring and reconciling accounts.
