The Role
Join the RAC as an SMR Lead Technician and use your expertise to support fellow technicians, solve complex repairs and help set the standard across our growing mobile repair network.
- Earn from day one - base salary of £50,825 (inclusive of London Weighting Allowance, if applicable) plus up to 8% bonus potential, overtime opportunities and a fully equipped RAC van.
- Lead and develop a team of Mobile Mechanics - support around 25 technicians through coaching, technical guidance and day-to-day leadership, helping them deliver exceptional service to members.

This role is based within the Kent area, working a 40-hour week, with 1 in 4 Saturdays and a weekday rest day.
At the RAC, we've built something different. Our SMR division delivers planned servicing, maintenance and repairs directly to members, giving our technicians the freedom of working independently with the support of a wider team behind them.
We're looking for a Lead Technician to support a team of approximately 25 Mobile Mechanics, providing day-to-day leadership, technical guidance and coaching to help them deliver outstanding member service and operational excellence.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced technician with leadership experience who wants to take the next step in their career. You'll play a key role in developing and supporting a growing mobile workforce, driving performance, maintaining engagement and embedding best practice across your territory.
While leadership sits at the heart of this role, you'll remain close to the operation. You'll continue to use your technical expertise, support colleagues with complex diagnostics and repairs, and work on the tools when required.
What you'll do- Lead, coach and support a team of approximately 25 Mobile Mechanics.
- Provide technical guidance on complex diagnostics, repairs and fault-finding activities.
- Drive high standards of member service, safety, quality and compliance.
- Support colleague development through regular coaching and mentoring.
- Promote best practice and continuous improvement across the team.
- Monitor performance and support technicians to achieve operational objectives.
- Build engagement and maintain a positive, high-performing team culture.
- Work closely with operational leaders to ensure consistent service delivery across the region.
- Remain hands-on when required, supporting the network with technical expertise and repair activity.
- Champion the RAC's values and standards in every aspect of the role.
- Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair qualification (or equivalent).
- Significant experience in vehicle servicing, maintenance, diagnostics and repair.
- At least 3 years' experience leading, coaching or developing technicians within a motor trade environment.
- Strong technical and diagnostic capability, with the confidence to support others in resolving complex faults.
- Full UK driving licence with less than 6 points.
