Founded in 2001, LEARN is a network of high‑performing, college‑preparatory, tuition‑free public elementary and middle schools with the mission of providing children with the academic foundation and ambition to earn a college degree. There are 11 LEARN Schools serving over 4,000 students in grades PK‑8 across Chicago, Waukegan, North Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

About

the Opportunity

The Specials Teacher will be responsible for the daily operation of his or her classroom, providing high‑quality instruction to all students every day. The classroom environment is supportive and community‑based. The teacher will cultivate and maintain ongoing relationships with students’ families, staff, and other community members.

Through our Multi‑Tier System of Support (MTSS) at all campuses, LEARN embraces the idea that all scholars can become expert learners. Teachers and administrators consistently evaluate how to best support and celebrate our diversity to benefit all scholars’ academic and social‑emotional needs and create learning environments that tear down barriers.

What

You’ll Do
  • Planning and delivering grade‑appropriate, specific enrichment programming in areas such as Physical Education, Music, Art, Technology, Theater, etc. to assigned students.
  • Organizing and utilizing materials, technology, etc. effectively to enhance instruction and promote students’ independence, social skills, and self‑esteem.
  • Providing active student engagement through lesson management and communication to promote student understanding.
  • Monitoring students’ behavior and assisting in establishing expectations for behavior in accordance with school‑wide/classroom discipline plan.
  • Promoting positive relations with students, staff, and parents.
  • Potentially organizing and running after‑school enrichment programming as arranged with the school.
  • Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
What You’ll Need
  • Significant content area knowledge in your subject area.
  • Demonstrated record of living LEARN’s Core Values.
Preferred
  • Bilingual.
  • 1+ year of teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering gains in student academic achievement.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Teachers will work in a busy and active environment with multiple activities occurring simultaneously, requiring supervision of all children at all times. Majority of work is performed in a general classroom/school environment. Teachers may be asked to participate in and attend organization‑sponsored events and meetings, such as field trips and network professional development.

Physical demands include lifting and carrying children and equipment, sitting on the floor or child‑sized furniture, operating standard business office equipment, communicating, preparing documents, cleaning and maintaining classroom equipment and furniture, moving moderate distances indoors and outdoors, climbing stairs,…
