Position Details

Specially Designed Instructional Coach

Kent ISD

Full time, 200 day year-round position

Non-Union Professional, 8 hours per day

Broad Statement of Responsibilities

This position is responsible for providing educational leadership and expertise in the field of Specially Designed Instruction through providing technical assistance, professional development, and coaching to local and regional and center programs.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with staff, students, families, local educational agencies, public school academies, center programs, and community partners to build a shared vision of learning and support programs aligned with county, district, and building goals for students with disabilities.
  • Assist local districts and center programs with evidence-based curriculum, instructional practices, service delivery models, IEP development, and high-quality program design.
  • Use knowledge of effective instruction to establish systems and routines that support ongoing monitoring of student progress, evaluation and refinement of instructional practices, and collaborative planning with PLC teams and administrators to improve student and school outcomes for students with disabilities.
  • Consult regarding Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) implementation related to intervention intensification and programming for students with disabilities.
  • Work with staff to develop meaningful, compliant IEPs and programming that support increased student growth, achievement, and postsecondary outcomes.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement professional learning, coaching models, and cycles of support for county, district, building, and center program staff, including classroom environment, student engagement, instructional practices, and other components of the High-Quality Programming Guide for elementary through transition-aged classrooms.
  • Learn and utilize emerging technologies and collaborate with Assistive (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) consultants to support professional learning and instructional effectiveness.
  • Assist local districts and center program staff with Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) decision-making processes and matrices.
  • Provide coaching support for KCTC and KCTC Career Focus programs, including disability awareness, instructional design, differentiation, and implementation of accommodations and supports.
  • Coordinate with staff regarding referrals, requests for service, and other identified needs.
  • Attend Kent ISD Board meetings, Parent Advisory Committee meetings, Coaching Collaborative meetings, and other countywide meetings as assigned.
  • Represent Kent ISD at state, regional, and professional meetings as assigned.
  • Work with local districts to establish systems, processes, professional learning, and shared leadership structures that ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE), and the Kent ISD Special Education Plan.
  • Ensure compliance with IDEA, MARSE, Kent ISD Board of Education policies, organizational policies, and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Job Qualifications
  • Valid Michigan professional certification in an area related to Special Education required.
  • Master’s degree in special education or related field.
  • Three years’ successful teaching experience in education with not less than two years in a special education program.
  • Experience developing training and support programs.
  • Working knowledge of the Common Core Standards and Essential Elements.
  • Demonstrated success working with, developing and implementing tiered intervention strategies.
  • Must possess exceptional organizational, verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with superiors, peers, subordinates, local/state/national education representatives, regulatory/funding agencies, constituent districts, and the public at large.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity, social justice, and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities.
