Youth Build Spokane is a Department of Labor–funded program serving young adults ages 16–24 who are working toward a GED or high school equivalency while building job-ready skills. The program blends academic instruction, vocational training, career readiness activities, and community service to prepare participants for employment or further education. As an Academic Success & Engagement Coach, this Ameri Corps Volunteer will support participants in achieving academic success while fostering engagement, leadership, and connection to the Youth Build community.

This position works alongside staff and instructors to provide GED support, encourage persistence, and help create a positive and motivating learning environment. The Volunteer will also assist with outreach and recruitment efforts to increase program visibility and participant enrollment. This position is ideal for someone passionate about education, youth development, mentoring, and building strong relationships with young people. All positions are contingent upon receipt of Ameri Corps grant funding and final approval of program awards.

Position details, including number of available placements and host site assignments, may be adjusted based based on final funding and program approval.

Member Duties
  • Academic Support:
    • Provide GED tutoring & facilitate GED practice tests.
    • Collaborate with Spokane Community College instructors to track students’ academic goals, progress & outcomes.
    • Support students completing their NCCER &/or Early Childhood Education certifications.
  • Student Engagement & Leadership:
    • Facilitate weekly check-ins, team-building activities, or student support groups.
    • Coordinate recognition events & student celebrations.
    • Support student voice initiatives & leadership opportunities.
    • Encourage consistent attendance & participation through relationship-building & identifying strategies to promote a positive cohort culture.
    • Coordinate & participate in civic engagement projects & service activities.
  • Outreach, Recruitment & Retention:
    • Help organize & participate in recruitment events, information sessions, & community outreach activities.
    • Share stories, photos, & program highlights to promote Youth Build activities & successes.
